Can anyone tell me how hard is it to change the s.e.m ignition to the new kokusan ?
We have done alot of work on my 01 FC 470 and this is all that is left to do. this bike is not for moto cross any more it will be used for desert racing. Any info you guys have will be great

A Kokusan retrofit is pretty much out of the question. it has been done once to my knowledge and required alot of fab work.
Just send the stator out to sparks and have it rewound. It will be better than new.

Hirbman did it, but I think he's the only one. Check out his gallery.

A much easier and just as good solution is to have your SEM stator rewound better than new by member "sparks" at U.K. Motoplat Bradford Ignitions.

If you guys think that is the way to go I will give them a try, My next question is why is the s.e.m. stator all ways failing it seems that they go bad every few months? I was told that the reason why is that I heat the stator to much, I spend Lots of time making single track trails in nevada some time tight and twisty, I also run zip ty coolant, I also was told that this makes the motor run to hot? I replaced my stator and in 20 miles it went bad too.
When I work on my bike I let my bike heat up but not so hot it over heats is that hard on them ? I have three bergs and this is the only one that does that. just wondering why the go bad so much? Do I need to vent the cover to prevent this from happening again?

hey desert rider,
if you are just a bit inclined in electric section or any of your buddies i can direct you to solve forever the sem problem and you will only spend something like 5 dollars.

this mod is tested and makes sem run forever until the bike melts from corrosion.

search in my gallery for a picture named THE TRANSFORMER MOD.

even if your bike doesnt have lights , it is worthy to buy just the regulator because all sem stators have lighting coils, so if you put the regulator so as to have 12 vac in your bike, then the rest is history, pm me if you go this way.

Regarding your choice of coolants-- the Zip Ty stuff, which is the same as the Evans waterless coolant, has both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage is that it runs at zero pressure, so it won't expand and overflow when it gets hot. Unfortunately, that is also a problem because it is hard to tell when you are overheating your motor, and damage can occur easily.

The other disadvantage is that this type of coolant does not transfer hear as well as water/glycol (good old green) antifreeze. So, you are basically trading higher head temperatures for lower temps at the radiator.

If it were my bike, I'd dump the Zip Ty coolant, and go back to a glycol/distilled water based mixture, the more water % the better, depending on how much freeze protection you require. Add two capfuls of Redline Water Wetter and you will have the most efficient coolant mixture for heat transfer, which is what the goal is.

Sparks will take care of your Stator, but you also asked about your coolant choice, so I thought I would chime in.

Hi Pavlos; how does the transformer help the SEM live a long and happy life?

Is there a thread where you have described in detail how this works?

Thanks,
Eric
