Hi from Texas. I love trail riding and i have always loved what the euro bikes have to offer. Been admiring the Bergs for a few years now and one came up recently nearby. I have always liked the idea of a trailbike with 6 gears too. I had a KTM520 and it wasn't bad on the road for short commutes and tarmac between the trails. On the trails, honestly it was too much for my type of preferred riding, (tight single tracks). The fe400 i think fits that bill a little more ideally.
This one looks pretty clean. it was registered for the road at one time but the last two owners only trail rode it. The current owner said it had never been rebuilt but at one time the cams were swapped out because of a known issue. I am going to dig around and try to find out what else was an issue (if any) for that year before i make a final buy decision. In the meantime if anyone has experience with this machine and can give me some feedback or pointers it would be much appreciated.

Hi

Check the stator and flywheel, ignition its not good. Also check the distribuition (cam, followers, valves,...).

Its a great bike.

i had an 01 for a few seasons and my buddy has had an 02 since new.......great bikes but like zaga noted, they had iffy ignition systems and could be finicky starters.....berg called the electric starter a "hot start only" system..... retarding the timing a bit, getting the jetting spot on and using an iridium plug all seemed to help......i'd consider mounting a beefier battery......i think those years had some cam, cam follower issues too.....the right hand kicker sucks.......great handling, sturdy, good power, even by todays standards.....

you need to advance the timing a bit

the jetting was spot on but the carb would wear the brass components out

they had cam follower issues not cam issues. the standard code cam '01' is gutless and best to upgrade to a '53' cam ASAP.

beefier battery? I suppose beefier starter motor and higher output battery would be another way of putting it!

at that age though it will be a case of being prepared to spend a few hours, some love and most of all some money to whip it into shape!

try to pull the head and look at new inlets, all 4 seats kissed, a new cam chain, an upgraded tensioner blade, new sealed bearings, a 53 cam as said, dual valve spring kit while you're there, new cam bearings but keep the seals in, de-coke it, check the tappet pads for cupping and the valve stems for doming. The early 2002s have a very thick cam shoulder and a steel sprocket, the late 2002s have a cam shoulder flush with the steel sprocket. you need to take the cam shoulder down tot he sprocket's level and then you can fit the later auto decomp and spring. this is the single most important thing to get right on any Husaberg from 1988 to 2008.

after that I'd fit a starter repair kit, a sledge mod, a new clutch drum for easier neutral finding, I'd file the edge of the gear selector for clean gear selection. as said a beefy starter, a CTZ7s or YTZ7s battery.

If you get it and you want advice - PM me. and if I ever should come back you'll owe me one o them there darn 16oz T-bones at the taste of texas! shoot! you owe me one already!!!!

regards

Taffy
