New guy here - possibly joyning the husaberg club

Hello 'bergs,

I'm looking to buy a '99 FE600 elduro (U.S. model) to replace my aging '92 DR650. I ride mostly pavement, with occasional dirt. No racing, mostly commuting, scraping twisties, ripping around town, light touring - in short: a do-it-all multitasker. The suzuki did allright in what I asked from it, but I need better (stiffer) suspension, and a lot more power. I want more exitement, i don't mind vibes, and I'd like to eventually convert the new steed to a supermoto. So, what am I getting myself into?

My questiones: 1. Am I way off in looking at a husaberg as a daily rider?
- how hardcore is the Dual-sport version of the '99 FE600 vs. the MX ?
- Oil change and valve adjustment intervals?
- Is there a cush drive on this perticular model?
- gas milage (is that heresy?)
- overall reliability?

2. Are there any major obstacles in converting this bike to a supermoto?
- can the stock fork handle the extra grip from a sport tire?
- do I need a USD fork from a later model to avoid excess flexing?
- is there a big enough selection of SM wheels and parts for the FE600?

The whole idea is to stay within my limited budget, thats why I can't consider a newer Berg or Husky or KTM that was factory built as a supermoto .

Your help is very much appreciated, any other thoughts on husaberg ownership I need to know - please don't hold back.

Thanks

you'll love it! the biggest problem i had with my 98 600 was finding a place where i could crank it on without chasing the rear end all over the place. oil changes are a must, no cush drive, but the biggest problem is the one(s) left to you by the previous owner. the 99 should have an usd fork iirc.

I got to give any Berg the thumbs down as a daily driver. Extended trips on the tarmac are no good as well. The main problems as Ned stated, no cush hub and maintenance.
These bikes were produced as race bikes and really need to be ridden and maintained as such. If you want to buy the beast for trail riding and blasting dirt roads on the weekends, more power to you and welcome to the club. If you are planning on alot of pavement pounding and daily commuting I think it will end badly as well as quickly for you both.
Just my 2 cents.

budget in a cush rear hub, upgrade the cam and valve springs, get the latest decomp, a decent plug, new atomiser and needle, camchain while you're there and then cross your fingers!

regards

Taffy
