I recently bought a 2006 FE450e, and now have a couple of hundred miles on it. My previous ride was a 2000 FE501, so I guess any comparative statements would reflect mostly on that bike. I like it alot! Can't say what is my favorite thing about it, the motor is magic, suspension is the best I've ever experienced, handling is magic, and the electric starter is a first for me. Biggest suprise is the amount of rip the motor has right off the bottom. I thought it might disappoint me just a bit, being such a short stroke motor, but it just spools up so quick it's amazing! Then, it's so smooth and quiet, it is decieving how fast it is. I have overshot turns, overjumped ledges and rises, and nearly flipped it over using too much throttle, due to the quiet, smooth, rapid flow of power. It is radically different than my 2000 501. I think I might actually be a bit faster on this bike, but I can guarantee that I will not tire out as fast. A very easy bike to ride fast. I have been riding Bergs since 1992, and really feel that this 2006 is finally a Berg that has no apologies or explanations attached, or needed. No feeling that I just bought an expensive kit bike, needing finishing. I have to put in a plug for the dealer, Nevada Motorcycle Specialties, they were a pleasure to deal with!

Hey Buzz, welcome to the club.
I feel exactly the same as you, this bike is the best I have ever had the pleasure to ride.
Not sure where you are from but where I am it's freakin cold and snowing, and it's killing me I can't ride this weekend.

All good things come to those who wait I suppose.

Hi buzzard
I'm with kelsow on this one. I love this bike. My background is small bore two strokes and this is my first four stroke. I'm still amazed at how low you can lug this motor. last week I was riding in the gravel pits and went up a, well the best way would be to call it a chute, about 40 to 50 feet tall. I put it in second and went up. Near the top, about 2 bike lengths, a 1foot ledge stole almost any momentum I had and stalled the motor not to mention made my heart skip a beat. It relight and just pulled me up put putin like an old diesal single.
Anyway Good luck with the bike.

Welcome buzzard, Good choice, glad you like your new ride. You are in Montrose,Cheeseberger is in Crested Butte, and I have riding buddies in Durango. First week in April we are planing a ride up Hermosa Creek Trail awesome single track, over Bolam Pass, easy jeep road with tons of switch-backs. Lunch at Rico and then back on The Scotch Creek Trail, ending at Durango Mountain Resort. About 65 miles lots of elevation changes different conditions. Will PM you with details hope you can make it. good description. do you notice how when you shift on mild hills how you'll tend to use more thottle at each up shift and the bike goes even faster and faster......kinda scary fast. yes in the woods the bike gets going so quick as it builds revs and power you do over shoot turns. I almost hit a tree like three times the first day. That never happens to me as I ride like 80% pace mostly, but 80% pace is 20% faster on the Fe450e.

I just got my FE450 a few days ago (thanks Cycle Shack and Tony Schertz, Lubbock, TX) and it's been sitting in my garage waiting for some break-in riding today and tomorrow.

I'm coming off of a KTM 250 RFS with an HT Racing 351 kit. The motor was great because it was also a short stroke, and I really loved the way it made power. I just about went to a KTM 400 exc when it was time to upgrade, but a little research made me realize that the Husey 450 would be like my beloved 351, but on steroids. I've ridden longer stroke 4t's before, but they tend to wear me out when I try to push them hard in the tight stuff. I have high hopes and great confidence that my new FE450 is going to be just what the doctor ordered.

congrats on the new bike. i also recently got a new bike, a 2004 fe550e and i love it. i have about 400 miles on mine, 300 of which were just put on in phoenix at the goup ride. i'm in crested butte and would love to hook up and go riding, montrose, delta,gj,green river? i have a fairly flexible schedule.

With so much attention given to the 550's I began to feel a little like the red headed step child but now after really having a chance to experience my 450 yesterday on some lower trails and major single track hill climbs I am super happy with the performance of this motor. It does want to be revvvved out a bit but that way I get my two stroke fix. The adjustments that worked for me (200lb approx) to get the plushness necessary for the our rocky, rooty, rutty, and radical trails is back off on the rear preload 3/4 turn, less compression dampening front and rear of at least 7 clix , 13/51 gearing and slower cam throttle. Some minor adjustments next to get the pilot jet just right for elevation. The next test is when the higher more technical trails open up. Having ridden with my buddy on his 200exc (my old bike) I clearly experienced the pros and cons of both bikes and at times I really misss the lighter more nimble aspects but the four stroke torque is proving to be a worthy trade off. I can only imagine how this bike would be if you removed all the E start and battery.
Next performance consideration might be the Boyesen quick shot accelerator pump cover. Any opinions on this?

First, I have to say that this UHE site makes me actually care that my computer and internet service actually function! I am looking forward to hooking up with those of you with interest in getting a ride together. I am semi-retired, with an at home business, so my time is always open to riding. Taffy wanted further comparisons to other Bergs, and asked if I raced. I raced from 1967-1996, competing in enduros and desert races in my adult years. In the 90's, I rode a KTM 550DXC, and a 1992 Husaberg
FE501, in the Colorado enduros, and the USRA desert races in Utah. In 1995, racing in the senior class, I had a life changing crash in the Wendover 100, damaging three cervical vertebrae. I ended up losing a lot of shoulder and arm strength, and some function of my hands. The neural surgeon said I was over motorcycles, so two weeks after surgery, I bought a 1996 KTM 360, as a rehab tool. In all honesty, I have lost some of my nerve, real high speeds bother me, and I don't take the risks I used to. My wife says it well, I don't have too many crashes left in me.
This new Berg is more refined, the quality of machining/casting of the engine cases, fit and finish, and equipment added on. The ignition and carb are the most noticeable changes, and I wonder if it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade earlier Bergs. The suspension is finally geting very well sorted, I feel like I am riding one of those bikes in a magazine test with factory suspension, it really works! The power of this 450 is a welcome thing to me. My 501s had that mongo power right off idle, building up to a nuclear reaction as revs increased. When I was younger and stronger, I liked that, now it wears me out too quickly. A real eye opener for me was a weekend where I had to ride my wife's CRF-230(had the cases off my 501 getting heliarced), and found that I could ride hard all day without tiring so much. I didn't exactly keep up, but I was riding! This 450 is the perfect blend of civility and power. I can ride as fast, or faster, than on my 501, and I do not tire out so fast. I rode Delta, Colorado yesterday. Only place nearby without snow right now. Delta scares me some, many skinny ridges, steep soft hills, square edged washouts, and assorted traps that come up quickly. On this 450, I found finesse and confidence I have not had for a while. I didn't even have to change my long underwear! I have no wisdom to share concerning the suspension or carb set-up. The dealer jetted my bike for my altitude, and it's so spot on, I have not touched it. Same with the suspension, I have not felt a need to touch a clicker yet, can't even tell you where they are. I am not that lazy, just waiting until it is above freezing to fool with things. I have ridden whoops, rocks, sand, and ruts, and marvel at how good it is.
I did fall off a skinny ridge, and rode it to the bottom, (or did the Berg ride me?)and cracked the plastic tank shroud by the lower radiator fin mount. She's not a virgin any more!

glad to hear your gettin out on your new ride. i put a new speedo cable, rear tire and a coolont overflow on today. can't wait to ride again. definately have to head for the lowlands soon. i know what you meanabout delta, i have only ridden it once and it sure did make me nervous, but it sure is cool out there. glad you're ok, better the bike than you. thanx for the pm.
