New Berg owner as a problem

Hi Guys,

I recently bought my first Berg which is a 2002 FE400 so i have no ideas of their common problems.
The problem i have is cold starting.
I have already bought a new Stator and a big Battery from Taffy.
After many kicks and winding her over with the e start for a long while she finnally fires up.
Another thing is that she will not start on the choke.

Has soon has she fires up and run for 5-6 seconds you can switch her off and restart with the first kick or prod of the button which leads me to the carb which i`ve been told is the original one.

So please can anyone tell me what the common problems maybe that i have and what to look for.

Welcome,

Well since you are already dealing with Taffy, I would enlist his help with your problem, he has labored long and hard to great effect with carbeuration.

For starters check the owners Doc on the left side of this page and it will give you a good idea of where to begin.
 
I have an 2002 fe400 that was a really hard starter for years untill I checked for the little carb jet under the pilot jet and found it missing.When it was installed the bike was an easy starter.
Also the choke needs to be only partially open when cold starting.The pull knob is an off and on affair.
Just hold the choke knob part on and push the button when you have checked your carb...

I agree with what the guys have said above....as an extra bit of info, I've just completed a heap of work on my mates 2002 FE 400 and can add the following:

a. Fitted it with a beefy starter I got for my 550 from Taffy....turns out the 550 starter is the same as the beefy starter so I fitted it to the FE 400 for my mate
easy job no mess no fuss job....with good results.

b. On a fully serviced and rejetted bike (including valve setting) the bike would not e-start from cold with choke on at all....turn it of and the thing would wind into life...seems that's just the way it is

c. Kick starting cold also didn't like choke....1/4 pump as you prime the kicker then a really sharp full kick and away she went.

d. Once the bike was warm it would always start on the button...I'd reckon it's the nature of the beast

e. I'm not an expert but figure that if you could replace the Delorto carb with a Kehin...many problems may be solved....my buddy is looking at doing that as a performance upgrade on his 400.
