New 2007 FE550e first ride...

Howdy All,

I've recently brought a new FE550e - see attached.
I've been a Husky rider got over 10 years, plus a 1150GS adventurer inbetween for 3 years... But decided to go the Husaberg... Probably most for the awesome engine... or from what I'd heard, plus the fact that it was now built in the KTM factory.

I've put an Akropovic pipe on it - an extra 2.9 letter tank under the seat - which I can imagine will get me now around 160-185km based on my first ride... Just breaker her in I rode 130km on 3/4 of the main tank at an average speed of 50k's... so easy throught he bush but extremely satifying... The suspension I left standard, and I found it for most part great... especially jumping... but there was a strange coupling of a certain speed and surface that made the head shake... but just before the speed and if you powered through it it sort of corrected itself.... never experienced that before - it's either been spot on with a husky or you found it's limitations... never pushed through them and discovered it had another level!

After the ride I've change the oil - cleaned the plug and oil screen... proceeded to want to check the oil filter and managed to get the first M6 hex bolt out... but the second, although my Allen key was sweet, the hed just rounded as if it was made from butter!! A sort of disapointing end to the day. Also I found the bottom edge of the seat above the pegs had worn through, where my tops of my boots had cut it and it was fraying...

Final critique - on the negative - is the bar and footpeg position... alittle too close - which if your a rider that sits down alot is okay because the seats great, but if you stand through corners etc... your rists tend to be vertical almost on the bars which then if you get hit in the rear or engine braking you get a lot of stree on your rists. The triple clamps are pushed as a trick item, with 3x positions.. Standard is in the middle, I'm looking forward to pushing it to the one furthist away... don't know how anyone can ride it with the one closest!!!??? I'm 5'9" and I reckon a pretty good size for the bike... at 78-80kg but if you were 6'+ you'd have to change your style I'd say.

More positives... it looks trick... the hotwheels sticker sets look better in the flesh in my option... the motor is strong now, smooth... so looking forward to fully using it a couple of 100ks down the track. The seat is great other than the wearing.... I suggest anyone who has the same problem, to cut a black hose, say 8mm diameter and fit it over the edge like a bead for protection, glue fix from the inner underside.

Looking forward to my next ride - if anyone on this site live in Melbourne Australia say G'day and perhaps organise a ride!?

Cheers, 07550e

I found a fix 4 the seat, just peal back cover a little and trim the seat base plastic, the foam does not come down that far anyway. My 07 did the same thing, I am 5.8 so it sound like our riding style is similar, I also pushed bars fully forward and have a scotts sub mount on it, that puts the bars up 1 inch as well, much better standing now. Enjoy and have fun!!!!!!!

Welcome 07550e.
Good write up.
You may want to try moving the bars forward and installing 20-30mm bar risers, that works for me.
As far as the head shake, make sure your sag is set spot on. It is very critical on these bikes. With a few minor adjustments I am sure you will be very happy with this bike.

Nice looking bike. I had to adapt to the cramped seating position myself. A taller seat and bar risers to accommodate my under the bar Scotts damper did the trick. The handlebar mounts should have four positions--two sets of mounting holes for the bar clamps, which are eccentric (offset) to give you two more positions based on how they are turned.

Have fun with you new bike.

Good luck with the new ride.Sounds like with a couple of tweaks here & there & you'll be very happy.

your bike looks great. I am in the market for the same bike. Just come off a 300exc, and a wr450. How does the power feel ? And is the Akro pipe too loud? By the way I'm in Melb and only two weeks away from making purchase so We could hook up at some stage-just doing final checks on bike

RE: 07 550e

Hi All to the above who's responded... Thanks for your tips!
I must say above all I'm wrapped with the bike - I tested through alot of different terrain for the first ride... technical tight stuff, up and down hill bolder sections, fast fire trails, log farmed areas where there's alot of overturned redy browny dirt, not loamy or rich soil but stuff that makes your traction and suspension feel like heaven!! :) Anyone know the area up and around the Reefton Hotel in Victoria will know.
I looked at this site for a few weeks straight before making the purchase so I thank who ever set it up because it's just a great forum and really honest - we all love bikes but we're also not salesman I think it's pretty unique.

Peter, as for the Akro, I've only heard one other standard pipe - and I'd say it's just a nicer note, not any louder that the stock - apparatenly it give's an extra horse as well so all good.

If your looking at buying one, I have ridden both your previous bikes, and I've found that the 300 was more of a handfull in the tight than the 550e, and the WR450 I rode tended to have a little tight of suffacated lower power delivery just before it got the power to the group... maybe this helped it so that it meant the power got to the ground... With the 550e though, it just seemed to breath and have no limitation on having controllable power either to wheel stand or clutch your way through tight rutted our slimy canopy covered terrain.

**** I've crapped on again... need to get out and about... Cheers for your replies and Peter let me know hen you've got your bike.

peterandrew, do yourself a favour (as molly meldrum says) and go and see Mick at Bendigo D/bikes and he is tops. I bought 550 and my new 450 from him and I live in Tassie!
I replaced the oil filter bolts on my 550 but the 450 ones seem ok. My seat rubbed a little too but I'm not quite as tall as you? I like the bars all the way fwd and the bars in alignment with the forks (if you know what I mean?) Also a steering dampner is the best money you will ever spend on a dirt bike! It just takes away the nervousness and gives you the confidence to go harder over rough terrain without the worry of the front being deflected. I got my s/dampner from the dealer mentioned s/hand from a WR450, but it fits well and you can take it with you each time you sell your bike. I also compensate for the sore wrists by lightly strapping my them with elasto plaste when I race.

RE: 07 550e

The Akro is a FIM spec pipe so tests at 94 dba, and has been noted to be quieter than the stk and other exhausts. A really fine piece.

As John has noted, the tall seat really helps the seating position, the transition to standing and helps you to move forward that little bit more in the corners.

Once you get a couple hundred miles on the bike, the suspension will settle more and you can adjust the preload propely. The berg has a light handlebar feel, but if its set up, again, once its broken in, you won't have much of an issue. A dampener will really help on high speed, long rides with fatigue.

You have a fine bike there.
