Neutral selecting

Hi

I'm having problems selecting neutral on my 2004 FE450.

When the engine is running it is virtually impossible to select. If I cut the engine then neutral is easy to find. Has anyone experienced this or is it something easy to fix?

Also I'd like to adjust the clutch to bite further out when releasing the lever. But the adjustor is at it's limit so will not allow me to adjust anymore. Is this potentially the sign of a worn clutch? I have noticed that if you pull the clutch in when in gear (engine off) there is clutch drag. I tried bleeding the clutch but no difference.

Any ideas out there or is it a case of taking to pieces and checking?

this is a chronic issue before '03 engines due to clutch design.one reason for this issue is due to grooved inner hub thus plates are held together to some degree when you pulled the clutch and there are a few more possible reasons but If I recall '04 engine has a steel tubes in clutch inner part so there should be no grooves formed.you may have bent plates or out of adjustment clutch.worn clutch plates do not lead to clutch drag but it leads right the opposite occasion.
mine '02 has the same drag and neutral problem but neither has grroved inner nor bent plates.There are several reasons and you should work them out.I think yours is just out of adjustment or has bent plates.take the cover and inspect. the problem should be an obvious one.
 
Neutral is nearly impossible to find. All berg's have that.
But since the clutch is so ***** light I don't really mind.
And I think its useful when climbing a mountain, its almost impossible to shift in neutral!
 
the key is right timing right speed and right throttle thats all :lol:
a quick fix: just give it some throttle while clutch in and when the bike is somewhat rolling and get used to it :lol: it should neutralize :)
 
Dose anyone think dirty oil makes fore some neutral issues. I don't hit neutral very often but when I do, I do alot and mostly rockclimbing when I don't use the clutch.
 
I think neutral is difficult on most bergs whilst the engine is running and the bike is stood still but is seems much easier if you select it as your rolling to a stop. I usually get neutral easily as I'm pulling upto traffic lights but if I wait till I stop all I get is 1st 2nd 1st 2nd and so on unless I'm lucky.

It's easy to find neutral.
Just try changing down from 2nd half way up a dirty, snotty, gnarly hill and sure enough...........there it is !
 
First gear, clutch in, blip the throttle & gently lift the gear change lever whilst the revs drop. Too easy when you know how. :wink:
 
i have the same problem on my 2007 fs 650.

just like many people said, either put it in neutral while rolling to a stop or if you are already stoped, roll the gas a little bit while shifting to neutral it is a lot easier.
A third method (or first, chronologically) I used to do before i found out about rolling on the gas helps, was put it in second gear and press just a little bit downwards... and it should go to neutral (you have to do it very softly otherwise it goes into first gear) :)

what really bothers me is going into neutral when i shift from first to second when riding (it rarely happens when shifting down). It happens pretty often and i couldnt find a patern on what i am doing to put it in neutral. It's pretty annoying and almost caused me some incidents in tight traffic.

when going from first to second, i tried keeping the gear change lever up with my foot a little bit more than a usual gear shift, just to be sure it got in gear and not in neutral, it seems to help although it still ocasionally goes into neutral.
 
funny thing with shifting is that the gears don't engage when you lift up or push down on the lever, all that does is lift the detent arm over the top of the next point on the shift star.

The gearbox goes in all by itself sometime after that.

our shift stars have really sharp points, most others have a distinct double profile so that the detent arm "waits" for the right moment before slaming the gears together.

ours is quicker, harder on the gears and I think harder to get nuetral with.

Im doing a test with a new profile will post pics if it works.
 
My Berg has this also. If you make just a little more rev's you can move it easily in neutral.
