Hey guys and gals my 01 501 ate the small roller bearing that the starter freewheel rides on in the transmission cover. all that is left is a small amount of outer race fused to the case. Any hints on how to remove it without dammageing the cover anymore than it is. I also need to remove the one for the reduction gear and I got the cage to come out but not the outer race. I am going to change the two on the case side also.HELP! do I have to heat the cover?? do I through away the cover and get a new one?? This is reminding me of somebody's signature "It's gonna cost alot but that's only an estimate"

You might try cutting the race with a Dremel tool and then use a small punch and hammer to tap it out.

I agree w/berger. I used to take out the outer shell of the nose bearing on VW's at the end of the crank with a dremel with a small abrasive drum attachment on it. Once you break it in one spot, it should crumple in on itself.

thanks,

bearing races

If you can get your part to a welding shop have it arc welded on the inside of the shell when it cools the race should fall out,Its an old trick mechanics use to remove bearing races from axel housings.

Hi BZ,

Without a dedicated positive stop blind bearing puller (not your average tool) cutting and / or welding will suffice.

Regarding cutting:
Try to use a carbide cutting tool as opposed to a stone abrasive as the abrasive dust will be more difficult to control than that of metal filings.

Above all else "Take your time and tread lightly" :D

Kind Regards,
Dale
