i was in my first hare scramble yesterday and fell in a creek bottom. it looked like the hieght of the water may not have gone in the air box but i think abunch of water went in the exhaust. the bike did start after some cranking, turned over right away so it wasen't hydro locked. i did not run the bike to get back to pits. when in the pits i dumped the oil and it was dark milky.

so what to do now?
- abunch of oil changes/flushes
- clean/drain carb
- clean air filter
- pull exhauset to make sure theres no water
- does the silencer need to be repacked?

do i have to do anything else?

If you have emptyed the cylinder of water.

- Put fress oil in it
- clean/drain carb
- clean air filter

start it warmed it up normaly
ride it like you stole it.

Regards

I agree,

The best thing you can do is to drain all the fuel, carb and tank. Fresh oil, and then ride the bike around for a while and keep it at full operating temp for at least 30 mins or so if possible.

You might pull the ignition cover to make sure that is all dried out in there as well.

What year is your bike?

i think the best is after the 30 minutes of driving replace for the second time the oil
because there can be left some water in the oil

bike is a 08 fe 650
ok thanks i did 2 oil flushes befor leaving the race but bike was not running and i'll do another after running the bike for 30min. thanks i forgot about the stator cover

Re: need some oppions bike layed down in water

was bike running when it went into the water?
i have seen a lot of cars go into water with engine running and come out with a hole in the block and broken connecting rod but signs of this are obvious, i guess on an automobile that is submerged the best thing that can be done is pull the plug and crank it, usually all blows out plug hole, i would clean out air filter, and definatly would rechange the oil after a little while of driving but i am sure oil would be ok after the second change, if it wasnt under water long i dont think it would get enough in the fuel to worry about but it easy enough to drain the tank and know for sure, a little water in fuel may not even notice it but alot can obviously cause issues depending on compression, usually the water in the exaust will stay int he exhaust and not go back into engine when it starts it will blow it out or burn it off

You are on it so just want to pass along my reassurances. I have submerged at least 8 engines and other than the one that hydro locked they did not suffer much if any ill affects I knew off.

For those that are about to crank to evacuate water through the plug hole or injector hole especially, stand back! The speed of that water is nothing you want any part of I can tell you straight up :)

i drained the carb cleaned the air filter etc. and fired up the bike all seems fine. now i wanted to change the silencer packing as it got soaked i took the rivets off the end cap and then poped them out but i can get the thing to move. any sugestions or is it the front cap that comes off? its a akro pipe.

Funny,
I generally ride around water and mud as much as possible these days, last winter i did try my luck going around a large body of water, only to loose my footing and end up under water with the bike on me,in pretty dirty muddy water to.

The bike was just above idle when it hit the water. I pulled off the aircleaner, the entire frame was full ,pulled off my boot , rang out my sock and used it to get most of the water out of the frame, squeezed out the air cleaner, pulled out the plug, stood the bike up vertical , hit it a few times on the starter and pumped it out, dropped the bowl on the carbie , blew out the main jet, back together, fired straight away, rode home about 30min . had to pull over twice and clean water from jet in carb, then she was off again, still went just wouldnt idle until you cleaned the jet or water from the bowl.

Cleaned out fuel system run some mythelated Spirits through the new fuel , this seems to breaks down the water if there is any left in the fuel system.Changed the oil , ready for the next ride.
I was advised to run the bike straight away with fresh oil, for a good 2-3 hours to get rid of any water traces inside engine, as apparently there was some risk with rust spots on bearings if it sat for extended periods after being in the water.

Still going, I think they are pretty finely tuned, as soon as they get upset air fuel mixture, they shut down pretty quick, not much fly wheel weight or other pistons trying to run the motor on, be a different story with a lot of rpm maybe when it hits water.

What they do here, is ride it like they stole it. Just keep up the heat and the water will boil out.
