Need carb help - Dell Orto 40mm

OK, so I decide today would be a good day to do the pre-season usual maintenance on my 'Berg, a '00 FC501. I need to completely go thru the carb as one of my list items, as it was sputtering when last it ran (Spring '07: I know, I know, I wish I rode more often, too, but that's not my reality).

Anyway, I get the carb off and take off the float bowl. I see this brass-thing is sitting sort of cock-eyed in its mount. I don't know what it does or why it's crooked, but it's got a slotted top so i figure I can unscrew it and clean it. Well, I put the screw driver to it, and it snaps off in my hand.

It's the thing that fits in the hole in the center of the picture.

Half the thing (whatever it is) came off, the other half is still stuck down in passageway.

If you look closely, you can see that across the surface of the crack, there's less than 1mm of shiny brass; the rest is pre-tarnished, meaning it was already broken before I got there. I just finished the job. It is evident on the following shot of the broken 'thing':

My questions:

What is this thing?

How do I best extract the part that's stuck down in there?

Where can I get a rebuild kit for this carb (gaskets, seats, jet needle, etc.)?

it's the choke jet mate.

i suggest that you buy another jet and get an engineer to machine the old one out and rethread it.

not being funny but another used dell orto could be cheaper. or spend the extra and go to a keihin!

regards

Taffy

Since the jet was already broken the threads may not be siezed in the carb body.Try removing the broken jet by using a slightly larger drill bit than the jet centre. Also use a reversing drill bit. Good luck..

Wow. Carbs are expensive. I don't think I'm ready to sink $250+ into a new carb, then have the fun of chasing down jetting and fitment issues to make it work for my application.

Has anyone ever heard of or used these guys? Motorcycle Carbs They're right around the corner from me in Kennesaw, GA.

I also agree that the brass jet may not be seized in the barrel, I may be able to free it with a little PB Blaster, jam an extractor on top of it and unscrew it with no damage to the threads.

I'll let you know something when I know something.

Hi, Crew-Chief....
For Dellorto parts I use this company.
http://www.herdan.com/dellorto/

They are less expensive by far than Motorcycle Carbs, always have what I am looking for, and have a gal that is really great at chasing parts and info. Make sure you have the full model # if you call them as there are about 8 different PHM 40 series carbs. The PHM40 on my '98 is a PHM40ZS, , Husaberg single fuel inlet, left side mixture and idle screws.
The carb is very simple to work on and easy to maintain. Remind me a lot of the old Amal Monobloc, Concentric, and GP carbs on Britbikes, and early Rochester, Carter, and Holley 4bb carbs for V-8 racing.

Hi Crew-Chief,
I have a used PHM40 that was pulled from my 02' 501. If you're unable to get the choke jet out of yours I'm sure I could make you a good deal. I did give the floats away to another Berg guy but other than that, it's complete. (Just needs some cleaning).

I didn't see a rebuild kit for a PHM40ZS (that's what I'm working with, too). I see 'gasket kits' for the A/B/N, and E/F/G/H, but not the Z. Nor so I see choke jets (sometimes called start or starter jets). Where is Herdan located? Port Clinton, PA? Not too far from where I grew up (3 hours or so).

MC Carbs has the kit and the jet, in stock, for $21.95 and $24.95, respectively. Not terrible considering I'll have it this weekend with no special shipping.

Try giving Herdan a call. I didn't see what I needed on the website but they had it when I called.

Crew-Chief,

If you look to your left on the screen, you will see a yellow section. Click on Downloads, then on manuals & documentation, then scroll down to 2000 parts manual (zipped pdf), download it and then scroll down to 1999 Workshop Manual download it.

If you don't have the owners manual you can download it at www.husaberg.com

Click on service, downloads, scroll down to Former files, and to Owners manual 2000, download it.

Read the sections on the carb and if you still have questions let us know.

You should be able to remove that busted jet with an easy out, available almost everywhere for a few dollars at Sears, or your local hardware or tool shop.

Regards,

Joe
