Need an electric start

Whats goin on dudes, i just picked up an 02 FS550, the thing rips but it is obnoxiously hard to start. The guy i bought the bike from disconnected the manual decomp. release and now it takes hours to start. Once it starts it runs cherrrry, but starting it is my issue. Where do I find an e-start system for this bike?? Or does anyone have any tips on possible issues. The gas has been changed along with the spark plug, one other thing i noticed is there is no choke on the bike, can anyone shed any lite on these probs.

Being an 02 I would have to believe the bike was built from an FC550. The FC had no e-start system and fitting one is not economically feasable if that is the case. I recommend reinstalling the choke and manual decompression device. There are actually 3 decompression devices used on the bike. 1) operated from a cable on the kickstart 2) a cable mounted to the bar lever 3) a centrifical device mounted on the cam.

The funny thing about the e start, is that the bike has an e-start switch on the throttle side of the handlebar along with a high/low switch. The wire coming off the switch termiates under the airfilter, which leads me to believe the bike was once outfitted with the e-start, do you have any idea what this hi/lo switch is about, i figured it was the headlight, but the headlight, horn and kill switches are on the clutch side of the bars, what the hell is goin on with this thing? The e start is totally economically feasible because it is neccessary for me to enjoy the bike, kick starting this thing makes me wanna go ride my r1 because its so freakin frustratin, how much and where do i look for the e start, i've been told by another berg brother that its gunna cost me like 1500.
The guy i bought the bike from was an idiot, he told me that it was an FS550 e, e obviously being for elcectric start, was there and FS e model in 02?
thanks for the post back

The manual decomp lever will only help you pass the hard spot at TDC, I would admit it makes things a lot harder.

The HI/LO thing is just a switch between two different mappings. You should just test it out for yourself and see how useful it is. Clue: this feature is now gone from the new Bergs.

An e-start is not likely to make the bike start cold, you'd still have to kick start it and then once it's hot you really don't need it.

I would suggest you reinstall the decomp lever first before investing in start motor, sprague and button.

As Berger said, there is an extra decomp lever on the kickstart, that I removed myself, as it is not super efficient and gathers more dirt and grime.

even if the bike had an e-start originally, it was likely removed because it made more sense to have it as a paperweight. the 02's had a "RE-START" when hot as opposed to an e-start. but even the re-start button will not work if your bike is not set up right. your 02 can kick easily if it is set up right. reinstalling or installing the starter components will be an excersise in futilility and will waste time and money unless you get the bike to kick easily first.

you need to reinstall the manual decomp and make damn sure your valves are right and the carb is set up properly. I belive that hard kick starting, but the bike runs awesome when started, is 9/10 times related to either valves adjustement or decomp adjustment.

the info is here to get your bike a 2-3 kick start wonder. you will need to seek it out. read the "DOC"

Supermotojny,

As these guys have said, in 02 there were no FS550's. It would have been a conversion from another 550 model - but, it could have been done by a dealer or the factory as this is known to happen on occasions if a customer specifically asks for it when buying new (well, it used to happen anyway).

Your start butten will be there whatever because it is part of the hi/lo ignition switch, it doesn't symbolise that there was an e-start.

Get the bike set up to kick easily following the above advice and then, if you want to, consider an e-start:

In UK pounds it will cost over 200 for the internal gears from new.

Then you'll need a starter motor which you can get a cheap Honda CBR starter motor for off e-bay BUT depending which model CBR you may have to make up your own bracket and make some mods to the crank cases.

Then there is battery and regulator/rectifier and you need to do the wiring.

It is certainly easier to get it kicking forst.

Hope this helps,
Simon

What this about CBR starter????I "ve been trying to get my fe650 (02) to button start, new batery larger, new starter bigger OEM newer model, new starter clutch etc...How many amp. draw should there be ???? I am getting over 100 amps seems really high.

RE: honda ???????

Same exact Mitsuba starter motor as the 650. The idea is to save $$ by getting the motor from a parter on eBay rather than brand new OEM.

I am like you and after upgrading the bob weight I am thinking about getting the upgraded starter clutch as well. At least even if it is a restarter, it's always good to have.

RE: honda ???????

you dudes need to harden up.
Give it a good service & set the valves. Then give it a good kick.
My FE650 motard has no starter & starts 2nd kick when cold with the choke on, & first kick when hot.

eeeuuuwww!

you're not just a pretty boy then you butch thing! (LOL!!)

I just like to save my hardness for something else

The Husaberg 650 e-start motor is a mitsuba sm-13. Honda have used slightly different motors along the years on the CBR. I ended up with a mitsuba sm-14 motor which is longer and has a slightly larger diameter so I had to grind a little bit from the engine cases and make up my own brackers.

All the best,
Simon

Sm-14 worked from a CBR worked fine on my 2001 501, all I needed was a bracket.

Sometimes you need to look at the photo and make sure you do not take the one with the two rods along the sides, as well as the one with the bolt holes flushed with the side but flush with the "knob" in the back. Oh well, just look at the photo!!!

I will tell my daughter who rides the Berg what you say . She had no problem starting my 620 KTM because the kick starter was lower on the bike and longer for some reason . But the Berg is higher and kicks harder. So I will tell to grow a pair, because I not giving her my 950 sm. Although she did just turn 16,yea she rocks the Berg and scares the crap out of me . So I guess i am a little soft. LOL

RE: Re: RE: honda ???????

HOW DO !!!

You can have a brand spanker of a starter motor, a battery of the QE2 and it will still be a barsteward to start if your valves and carb jetting is out . I have a leccy boot on my 05 FS650 and if ime honest i probabley kick it 70% of the time
(must be a macho butch thing). Get the pilot jet and mixture right do the valves and spend your well earned on something nice for her indoors or whatever

RE: Re: RE: honda ???????

The thing that pisses me is the hit and miss.Put 2nd ground ,new relay ,new battery, newstarter ,so on. Still doesnt button start , I've watched other bike same as ours, button start time after time in the same shop.

RE: Re: RE: honda ???????

all thing being equal, they should be no mechanical reason why it won't start. check that auto decomp, valve lash and jetting, it will go.

RE: Re: RE: honda ???????

FYI:
I tried an Honda CB900RR starter. Big, strong, but small this rev, it's does not turn the engine quickly.
(the starter would have been needed for '03 FE650)
