Need advise on top end....

Hello all,

I am contemplating removing my top end to take a look around for wear and/or anything unusual. I have about 50hrs on the engine and I would like to check for any signs on wear before I have one of these, "Stuck out in the middle of no where" situations. Can anyone give me any advise on whether I am wasting my time, is this a good idea? I change my oil (Delo) after every ride, ~3hrs per ride, everything is stock on my '02 FC550 except I have the updated roller rockers and counter balancer/main bearings. I guess what I am wondering the most is what will I have to replace for sure? What should I replace? and most importantly, what am i looking for besides wearing bearings? What I am most uncertain about is the decomp mechanism and cam positioning upon reassembly. Will someone be so kind as to give me some simple step by step procedure (with pictures/drawings if possible) as to what I need to do to get through this as this is new to me and I would like to be as thorough as possible to avoid having problems after re-assembly? Rough estimates of parts costs would greatly help as I am limited on my budget right now...
Taffy- Do you have anything like this in the new sheet you are putting out?

As always....Thanks for your help everyone,

If you are really bored and feeling ambitious you might pull off the rocker cover and have a look. I don't think I would even do that as long as it sounds and runs good. You have the updated parts, I would think you would be good for another 50 hrs at least.

I agree with Berger, time for a rocker inspection! Takes 2-3 hours if you are slow like me. Do it at aleast a day before you ride so the sealant will have time to cure. (threebond 1211 is best).

Carl,

So all i'm going need is some sealant unless I find something that needs replacing? What is threebond 1211 and where do I get it? Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for, tolerances that I should check? Can I check my cam chain tensioner from the rocker cover?

Thank you Ken and Carl

pm me your e-mail address and i'll send you a copy of the sheet. i think it will be of some value but if it described a top end rebuild quite frankly i might as well write a book!

regards
