I am prepared to buy a new bike this winter and am looking at three new bikes, 2005 Ktm 400 exc rfs, 2005 Husaberg Fe550e and a 2005 Suzuki Drz 400e
I have read about as much as I can find on these bikes and would like to read the opinion of the Husaberg enthusiats. I will be driving all off road, single track, wet and muddy and fire roads. I am 6'3" tall(1.9 metres) and 240 lbs(109 kgs) dressed and ready to ride.

Thanks Joel

That's an odd mix. Why a 400exe and not a 450exe or 525exe. The Suzuki is outclassed by the KTM and Berg. I vote for the Husaberg :D

Personally, unless you plan on riding asphalt a lot, I think you should drop the DRZ from your list. I believe that the KTM and Husaberg are a different class of bike altogether. But then again I have a few friends who love their DRZ's... other than that- I have no preconcieved notions about either the KTM or Berg being better than the other. all i know is I have more fun on my berg than i did when I rode a KTM 525. :D

A friend of mine has a 400exc. I had a DRZ. I now ride an FE501e.

The DRZ is ALOT heavier, not just in real weight, but in perceived weight. The frame is a soft heavy steel. The bike carries all its weight up high. Not a nimble bike.

The 400 exc is a nice nimble woods type bike. Very mild power, similar to the DRZ power. But a mellow power band that will not haul your weight well. No Offense, but 240 lbs is alot for the 400 to carry.

The FE550e will be more nimble than the DRZ, will be easier to do valve adjustments than the KTM, and will have the power to put a grin on your face every time you ride it. The Husabergs are much more stabile than the KTM's at fire road speeds, yet are not hard to turn in the tight stuff.

550 all the way..

I also agree that your weight put's you into a larger displacement arena. I ride a 550 and think it's the best.
One thing to consider is your local dealers. I have dealt with some of the other jap dealers in my area. They pretty much treat you like the cookie cutter bike they sell, crap. Husaberg dealers on the other hand appreciate the fact that you stepped up and buy one of these beauties. And are willing to back you up on a more personal level. Also, they have more in depth info on the bikes themselves. Because they generally ride them.

DaleEO has a 550 as well, and is closer to your weight than my 170lb mass. He may be able to offer some wisdom here. You can also checkout our "First impressions" articles on this web site for more in depth info on a new 550. This is a great site with plenty of knowledgeable people including manufacture reps, dealers, vendors, racers, riders, all willing to lend an ear to any issues or questions you might have about Husaberg, and others brands for that matter.
The lack of rider bashing , name calling, pissing matches and rude remarks etc.. make this a top notch site..
Sorry to carry on, I just think this site rocks!
BTW you can go to
Husaberg web site and download the manuals of all the late model Husaberg's.
Good Luck :D
John

Thank-you for the opinions fellows. I am pretty sure that this is the bike I will get, just looking for a little reassurance to help me justify the cost over the Jap bikes. Joel

My two-bits worth,6 ft,240lbs. I ride FE450 and it is the best bike i've owned . Have had an exc520 and gasgas450 and the berg is my favorite , just my opinion

I've got the '04 550, and upgraded to appropriately rated springs fore and aft. I weigh in at 280+ all dressed up ready to ride, at 6' tall. The 550 has all the power you want, without being too beastly about its delivery. And by my signature, you'll know which bike I recommend you get.

The guys have said it all. The 550 itself is amazing, no questions asked. Call me sometime if you have any q's, I've raced and ridden all the berg's, and had the luxury of trail riding my buddies 400 DRZ buick. THAT totally reaffirmed my belief in the berg's.
