YO!!!

Okay, I must admit I am a newbie to riding dirtbikes in general. AND, I must admit that I have a little girlie chicken-neck. I swear it hurts like heck. It started last weekend. I know ya'll arn't doctors, but...

Is this normal at the beginning of the season?

As I get back in shape, (should) this go away?

Feeling like I have pink underwear on...

Parsko:

How old is your hemet? Some of the older Bell full face ones were really heavy. Maybe its time to update to a new lightweight one. I have never experienced neck pain due to wearing a helmet but that doesn't mean anything. I would not take any chances. Have a doctor take a look at it ASAP.

My buddey had that problem. Just a week neck, You'll get a strong neck soon and it will go away. I never had that problem. I use the 4-way neck machine at the gym to build up neck strentgh. i can lift almost 150lbs. with my neck sevrall times.

justin,

You're simply a wealth of solid information and a subject of my awe. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we all stand in your large neck's shadow.

humbly,

Have you been eating moldy bread again? Didn't your mother tell you discard old bread that has that black mold growing on it and to stay away from all lysergic acid derivatives. If not well now you know. 8)

I agree that a heavy helmet can make your neck hurt. You might want to check out some of those neck braces{protecters}because if you pull something in your neck,it will take quite a long time to heal. Can also be caused by the way you ride{to tense}.Take something for it and if it still hurts{badly}see a doc. or to be safe see one anyway.Take care and keep the rubberside down.

This was my thought. When you're uncomfortable for whatever reason(new to riding, new area, over your head), you tense up too much and it can affect your neck/head the most. When you notice the pain, take note on whether you're clenching your teeth or too stiff.

On a related note, I can bench press your motorcycle.

thanks,

Make sure you do some limbering up excersises
before you ride. The neck area is one I have to do the most.
Its just like a boxer stepping into the ring cold,he will get
cramps, tire quicker and get hurt easier.

.....and if it still hurts when you've finished riding for the day.....my fix is 800 mg of IBUPROFEN! Works great. It acts like a muscle relaxer and I get no drowsiness. Exercise is probably the best. I wanna see Schwim bench my motorcycle! BD

What do you meen?

Elementary my dear justin. As an example: It is believed that in 1692 most of the residents of Salem, Mass. ate rye bread with moldy Ergot, a fungus, baked into it that contained alkaloids that are derivatives of lysergic acid (LSD) thus leading to the Salem Witch Trials situation.
The admonition to stay away from "moldy bread" is sage advice, although it is unlikely to be the cause of your particularly unique style of communication.

I am at such a loss here. I'm way to confused. Please explain.

Parsko,

Pain is always a sign that something is wrong - and while it could be a minor strain, go get it checked out by a relevant qualified specialist - and then you could also get advice about how to avoid it in the future. You could even get to the heady heights of 150lbs - all 4 ways

Seriously, never f*ck around with pain near or at part of your spine

I have only ever experienced neck pain after crashes, most times just whiplash type neck strain but these also need careful attention! I've never experienced it just from riding........

Man, this thread is still alive....?!?!?

Well, it's been a few days. I ended up going to bed this past thursday, only to wake up Friday unable to move my neck at all. (I took Friday off regardless to replace the wheel bearing in my truck 'cause I went to a smokeout (60 pounds of meat!!!!!!!!) this past weekend). Never did my bearing. Called mom to see if she had any advice. She told me to put ice on it. I did 2 20 minute intervals of icing separated by about 1.5 hours. That did work, it worked great. BUT, not perfect. I have been taking it easy since Friday. But still sore.

My guess:
There was a period where I was riding every day for about 6 days. Towards the beginning, was a 3 hour ride. The other days were only about 15-30 minutes in the woods behind my pad. I took a few days off after this, cause I noticed the neck thing. Then I rode last Tuesday for about 1/2 hour. I think this is when it went overboard and hurt muscles that were already bruised.

What have I learned:
Early in the season when totally out of shape, ride easy. Also don't ride often. I think it was the frequency that did me in.

I realize that I am totally out of shape. I do have a new helmet. I think schwim is right with being comfortable with riding. I am inherently a high strung person, so that doesn't help much. Bottom line- I am pushing too hard too early.

ALSO- Though I only have a tree-fiddy, it is FREAKIN' FAST!!!!!

I love my berg, and can't wait till my neck is good enough to mount her and take her for a ride!!!!

Thanks for the advice all!
