08 fe550 29hrs valves in spec, runs great.

however it produces an engine chatter when there is a slight load at low rpms. the chatter goes away if i just give it more gas and go faster or gear down increasing rpms and staying the same speed.

am i just lugging the engine at to low rpm. offending rpm probably 2500-3500 guessing. seems to happen more in 4,5,6 gears. if it is from lugging what actually causes the chatter?
thanks peyton

Hi Peyton, i have the same bike, i have had similar strange noises that i was convinced was engine related but turned out not to be. take a close look at the drive chain idler roller, it can give off an unusually loud clatter. If you have the factory aluminium sump gaurd it can also rattle its **** off on the bottom frame rails, you need to pack it with rubber.
regards,
jock.

could be the Drivechain slapping.
mine dose it if you load the engine in high gear and go slow

on my 650 it was the longer of the 2 headers rattling in the collector where it goes 2 into 1, 2 strong 2 stroke springs fixed it.

sounds like the above or even the cam chain has run out of adjustment? remove the centre bolt then the two holding the tensioner and remove carefully. i suspect that the tensioner has no clicks left.

regards

Taffy

my 08 550 did the same from new, still doing it now.
i was convinced it was about to self distruct, i bet its bugging the hell out of you just like it was me.

I checked everything i could, drive chain tension, cam chain tensioner, headers, primary nut and re torqued every nut and bolt on the bike, guess what, no difference.

it wasnt until i got hold of a pair of moto wheels with a spare chain that the noise went completely.

so my guess its something to do with these drive chains.
my 450 used to be fine with renthal chains so when this one is shot, ill be going back to those.

hi, my 2008 650 produces some times the clattering sound you mention and as i found out is the chain slapping at the rear wheel's mudguard! you can propably see the wear signs on the mudguard now at the side of it.
it happens mostly to me with 6 gear - low rpms

thanks guys it turned out to be the skid plate. Chopped up an old bike tube and put inbetween frame and skid plate and the noise went away.
