Anyone got any suggestions..... please, other than should have ridden it first etc I know I know.....

I've got a 99 Berg FE400 electric start enduro. Silly me bought it 2nd hand without a test drive. And its got a mystery problem....

When the engine is under load, ie just as its getting to the good bit where it should take off like a scalded cat, it feels like its missing, and won't rev out, won't pick up any higher revs etc - basically very very flat. Won't lift the front etc

Symptoms sort of feel like its running out of petrol/choked etc

Things tried- changed carb for new one
Changed stator for new one
Changed petrol tank for new one with hoses etc
Changed coil
New iridium plug
Set ignition timing
Set valve timing /clearances etc to what they should be
nothing in the air filter/intake/manifold etc (checked up to the head) blocking it and filters are oiled and fine

For new please also read different/alternative, (stator etc was brand new)

Could it be anything to do with the automatic kickstart decompresssor letting the valves lift and killing the compression??

At the moment no difference at all. Its sitting at a dealers now and they have tried all the above. Anyone got any suggestions however bizarre from experiences themselves as dealer is scratching his head at the mo...

Morale of the story is obvious, try the bloody thing first.

At this point in time, all I want to do is have a proper Husaberg experience and if its as good as its supposed to be............ at the moment I'm bothered Ive bought a money pit tho'

Re: Mystery problem - one cure is a gallon of 4star and a ma

Diagnosing long distance is folly, but I do have two things to check. First is the cam timing. There is only one correct position, a tooth off in either direction will affect how it runs, and one direction in particular will cause valves to hit the piston. Second, check the RH crankshaft bearing for excess play. The SEM ignition will not trigger at all correctly with any slop in the crank. I had a KTM 550 with that problem, and it was a nightmare to solve. It actually ran OK with a Motoplat ignition installed, but would not run with the SEM until I installed a crankshaft bearing with no slop in it. It was a brand new 1992 bike, by the way. Good luck, you will love it when it runs well!

I didn't see in your list of "things tried" that anyone has checked cam lobe wear. I would expect a dealer would have checked for cam wear, but......it's worth asking the question. Best of luck to you. BD

I can think of a few more things.

Are the tank vents on/in the gas cap plugged?

Have you checked the manual decomp lever adjustment ?

How new was the 'New' carb, was it a Dellorto PHM 38?

What jetting did it have?

If the carb had been on another bike and had not been used for some time it might have dried up gas plugging some of the jets; this could have been the problem with your carb.

How new are the needle and needle jet? They wear and need to be changed every 2000 miles or so

Have you checked the exhaust pipe to make sure it isn't partially plugged?

Are you sure the valves are adjusted correctly?

Regards,

Joe

carb was one the dealer said was off another bike and should have worked, and had the right jetting in as he'd already fixed that

gas tank venting was one of my thoughts too - had this on an old kawasaki road bike years ago where the tank laquer bunged the vented fuel filler cap up

simple check - take the gas cap off while riding it and "gas it" tried it and it made no diference

update : he thought it might be the one tooth thing too on the camchain... will advise

thanks for the prompt response

Well, I'm thinking exhaust, too. Bird or rodent nest, of possibly a collapsed silencer. Also, children, if left unchecked like to deposit small items in the stinger. Good Luck, Doctorcorey.. :)

hi mate i had the same problem until yesterday tried all sorts to get it running right. eventually found it was a tooth out on the cam timing.

that was the thought too. ....

Doesnt matter now, the b**tard thing blew up........

conrod snapped and went thru the bottom of the crankcase at about 60mph....

whoooooooops !!!

still at least I was on a straight road, not face first into a tree/ditch/fence/wall/oncoming car/bike with a locked back wheel

to all those who replied, thanks for trying...

anyone got a second hand crankcase for e FE400? in the UK

On Ebay right now there is a new crank case for a berg. read the fine print and due to the price it might be worth the shipping costs!

link here ebay crank case

If the seller wont ship to the UK you can have it sent to me and would happily prep it and ship it to you.
