The berg wasnt starting up the other day (02 fe400e), so i decided id look over the valves, found a tappet that desperatley needed to be replaced...so i pulled it out and replaced it, now the bike will start, but when i gas it it dies on me...i can gas it really slow and gradually, and its ok to a certain point....then it goes crappy again...did i adjust my valves wrong? any other ideas?

Sounds like water or crud in the carb. Thats easy enough to check.

When was the last time you cleaned that nasty oil accumulation from the carb intake boot? Worth a looksee.

replaced the spark plug today for good measure, just before it stopped running the other day, it was kinda stuttering at idle, and if you started it, then left it, it would kill itself eventually, but not if you revved it a little...then it was fine till the next time u started it :?

ill rip the carb out tomorrow if i have time and take a look see for goop...

How many hours are on her? Have you removed the timing cover and cleaned & inspected under it? Do that, and drain the carb and some fresh gas with an octane rating of 93 or better and a fresh air filter should straighten out it if it's a simple problem. With that one valve out of spec don't be surprised if the solution is more complicated.
