went off to swaffham this morning to get the fitness up and try some jetting.

came in from the first session pleased as punch and then tried a needle from JD. it ran like a pig. did 5 laps, came in. tried the needle on the top clip, then the bottom clip, bike misfired at stand still. awful.

anyway did one lap with what i thought sounded better and came off the track. you have to do 4mph-walking pace-which i duly did.

then bang! and lots of smoke and a check indicated that the top of the rocker cover had been blown out by the camchain.

now at home i can say after pulling the side and top off that it was a tappet nut!

all my fault. how i did it i dunno but that's the truth of it.

have ordered a camchain and now need a new/used rocker cover. got one?!?!

regards

Taffy

After Moab I will have a complete 501 on e bay parted out. But not until after the adventure. 26 days

Tough luck taffy. I always worry about get them nuts tight enough? I wouldn't think that cover would be all that expensive? Any way good luck.

Hi Taffy,
Sorry for your misfortune. Tappet screw failure was quite common in the early days including the well ventilated rocker cover.

For what it ma be worth :
Some Husaberg late model tappet screws yield well before reaching their suggested torque.

Regarding the metering rod:
You were warned ahead of time, hence my custom profile. :D

Sincerely,
Dale

well that was one of the needles. just another 4 to go then!

can't wait

Hi Taffy,
Upon my return from Daytona in mid March I should have a small production batch of metering rods awaiting me. I will forward a couple to you in good faith that they will not be duplicated and mass produced for profit in the United Kingdom. :)

Sincerely,
Dale

of course sir! thanks .

BTW i just 'won' (don't you love that word!) a husey 650 head tonight from '02 with the big valves. i got another standard one last week but the valves are tuliping at this point.

Taffy

:finger: so you're the one constantly bidding against me on ebay

bidding cost you nothing. it cost me another £30! :D :D :D

i'll be selling one or t'other as soon as i've ported one and tested it etc.

Taffy

Hi Taffy,
Any chance that your engine started acting badly when the valve adjuster nut loosened and came off, maybe the poor running was not a result of the needle at all.Just a thought!....nsman

nsman

quite right. i agree with you and will only know when i put it back together with the DMS needle as it was when running like a scalded cat!

i was only playing along there, but yes i wondered.

Taffy

Damage the thread above the nut and it can't come off.

Cheers Phil.

when all this is done i will be selling the BV head because according to my maths i can't get any compression out of it on a 400. of course, if i run a 450LS or a 470 then all that would change!

i also bought another SV head and it's that that is on the bike right now. my original head is the one that knackered the cambox top (re; my mistake!) and also took out the camchain guide pivot on the left side of the head.

so whilst i got that done i did a porting job on it. that head will get dyno's i hope after easter although god knows where i'm going to find the time what with buying a house and my business peaking!

so i'll let you all know when they're up for sale.

regards

Taffy

Why the hell do tossers get so emotional about eBay?? At an auction you never seem to see losing bidders walking up to smack the winner of an item?? Just put in one "bid" for the absolute max you'd be prepared to pay when you first see an item then walk away.

If you "win" it then it will be yours for some amount less than what it was worth to you. You're ahead!

If you don't "win" you're still ahead! Obviously someone else was prepared to pay more than it was worth to you. To "win" it you would have to rip youself off with a "bid" of more than you wanted to pay.

Personal experience is that eBay prices are usually high, probably due to emotional tossers ripping themselves off! A good place to sell stuff.
