My Dellorto setup - Please comment

I had a couple issues with my 01 FE501e this week-end, mostly stalling at low speed when negotiating turns in the sand or riding on rocks. Also I could not restart it on the button, but one kick was enough 95% of the time.

It is equipped with a Dellorto PHM40 which came from the FX470 that now belongs to Json (thanks to Berger for the opportunity).

The carburetor is in good shape, except for some deposit at the bottom of the float bowl -- right now the part is partly filled with carb cleaner to dissolve most of this deposit.

I cleaned up the carb with carb cleaner and now it is drying.

Here are the readings:

Throttle slide #40, K35 on C2 (from top), MJ 180, PJ 33, start jet 45, 266DR and the float arms are parallel to the top but only at 15mm.

Considering the fact that I ride around 2000ft most of the time, I think this is way too lean and could explain my problems.

What do you think?

The stabilizer washer is also very tight and seems to be very hard to remove, if you can tell me what the best way to remove is so that I can clean and maybe replace the PJ, that would be great.

Also I realized that the vent hose on the left side of the bike had been pinched all along after I zip tied it too tightly to the frame. Could this be part of the problem?

Last question: what is that that slide cutaway that you guys talk about in Taffy's doc?

Thanks for your help, guy, I am sure I am very close to fixing my little issues here.

I am thinking about doing the following (in order)

1-Increase the Main to 190 and increase the Pilot to maybe 45
2-Getting the 45 slide
3-Other upgrades: DR270, lower clip to #3

ho hum!

that sounds like you nick!

that could be all your problems! look mate, did bobzilla report these bitchin problems?

i thought not!

there's nothing wrong with your carb first of all.

secondly whatever you do, you do one change at a time and you record the changes and you give them a chance. that doesn't mean rev the thing up on choke and on the axle stand!

you seem to have twigged that you have a #40 slide with the 4mm cutaway or 'la buse'.

me? i would leave alone if i'd just found one potential problem. if you have changed the settings since you pinched the pipe then change them back again.

45PJ Sound A Little Big To Me,Check The Owners Doc And See What The Others Use,Thought A 35PJ With The 190 Main Would Be Better.
Also Fit The CD1 Jet That I Was Told Needed To Be Fited,It Sits In The Same Hole The PJ Screws To.
I Fitted This To My Dads Bike After Rebuilding Most Of The To End And A Few Jetting Changes And Make A The Bike Easier To Start.

Kez

can you find that thread again please. i'll put it in the owners doc this time if you would?

This is not the original carb, I bought this one from Berger (it was on a FX 470).

The original carb was obviously wrecked after more than 10,000 miles, and it has now been retired and is just there for parts. Also the hose was just pinched for the last ride, which was fine except for the low speed stalling issue so I guess it may be a factor but I am not 100% sure.

Even if 45 would be overkill, these jets are obviously too lean for my altitude and weather. 180 / 33 will become 190 / 35 and I will see from there.

Do you suggest I get the 45 slide?

But I really need to know how to remove the stabilizer washer, so I can eventually change the idle jet.

Also should I keep the float arms at 15mm or increase to 18mm?

Finally where do you suggest I buy a jetting kit at? And the slide?

Thanks

Hi Le frog,

Here is what I have in my 01 FE501E and it works great, which is what the bike came with. I've tried messing around with different jetting but, always found these stock settings to work the best. You will have to play with the PS a bit to find the best setting for the idle circuit. And I agree the settings you have appear to be quite lean. Try this set up here and I bet you'll be happy. Mine starts all the time on the button, or the kicker. It just doesn't start on the button cold. And, I just use the choke when it's cold for a couple of kick throughs to get fuel into the motor, then turn it off when I want to get the mill lit. It won't run with the choke on, so if anything you may want to go to a smaller start jet. They (smaller start jets) weren't available when I was messing around with the jetting and was always able to get the bike fired by just using the choke as a bit of a primer.

MJ 195
NJ DR270
N K35 @ #4 from top
PJ 35
CA or Slide #40
STJ 45
PS set at 2 & 1/8 turns out.

If you look at the 2001 parts book you'll see that you just need to put a wrench on the main jet support and unscrew it to get the stabililzer washer free. Sometimes it's really on there, but, if you just work it gently a bit it will come right off, then you can get to the PJ.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Dale. What altitude do you ride at?

Also where should I get the jetting kit?

Thanks again!

up to 2,000 feet can be treated as sea level nick. also it's not that critical. i trust you've seent he jetting in the owners doc that might help you.

good luck. i can probably help you better if you let me know about each cough and splutter!

I took the idle screw out and forgot to count how many turns out...

Dale, or anybody with a Dellorto-equipped 501, could you tell me how many turns out on the idle screw?

Thanks! :D

That is easy to do. I can give you a setting for the mixture screw to start with witch is 1 3/4 turns. I found the stock settings from a 99 workshop manual witch I base my carb settings on my bike a 96 FE501. It should be in the ball park. Good luck.

I would have to take a guess on that. Say to start with 2 1/2 turns out. Once you get it running then you can adjust it or in other words fine tune.

good old froggy!

lift it off the base about 2mm ken!

of course, if you're going to fit fans you'll have to completely re jet the bike. get it running and adjust immediately.

it'll be running so cool that you may have to go back to your standard jetting i would think!
