MY Berg on fire !!!

last weekend i was riding my Husaberg fc550 (2003)
after a few hours on the track , my berg started to smoke , and it wasn`t coming from out of the exhaust pipe !! so i stopped the bike , released the buddyseat and noticed that the foam airfilter caught fire !! i pulled it off just before the flames reached the fuel tank , luckily there wasn`t any damage on the bike 8O ...

so how could this happen ?.. i haven`t noticed the engine having a backfire or something , it ran great on the track

the foam airfilter was oiled with putoline airfilter oil

the most obvious one is a backfire in the carb through in to the sock area. i think this happens rarely but i'm suprised it caught fire.

perhaps you should treat it as a one-off!

could it be that the airfilter oil is highly flamable?..

ive had several backfires before , but they never resulted in a burning airfilter , mostly just blow the carberator off

after i changed the carb settings this was gone

I know that Twin Air makes an anti-backfire filter. On the WR250F one of the mods was to cut out the mesh from the filter holder and then replace the filter with anti-backfire version.

Do they make any Twinkie-shaped filters, I don't know.

Edit: I just checked their Web site and although they do list Husaberg in their brands, no products seem to exist... :(

Here is a long shot!

Maybe a little gas leaked out of the hose attached to the left side fuel tap, or if your Berg has a Keihin conversion, maybe from the hose attached to the carb, and got onto the exhaust pipe. This could have flared up and got sucked into the air filter.

I have seen hoses and clamps that allow some leakage if the hose is wiggled around like it might with hard riding.

The fuel taps are prone to getting dirt on the outside of them. This dirt gets onto the fuel valve sealing surfaces. causing the valve to be very hard to turn on and off, and leak to the outside. Just bumping one of them can start it to leak to the outside.

have you touched the engine lately?

for one reason or another you may have been getting a pool of fuelk in the bottom of the sock and a backfire in the engine caught it alight! i think that this is the biggest probability.

next time you get the bike running, clean the carb out to stop backfiring and then look for fuel residue in the sock after a ride etc.

i have often had it IN THE PAST but not so much now.

Hi taffy,

Last valve check at 46 hours, no adjustment required. Intakes still 0.004" and exhausts still 0.004-0.005". No adjustment required in last 25 hours.

God bless Dale for the LRX2 cam and Husaberg for the improved cam follower bearings.

Still running Dales jetting recommendations, couldn't be any better! How is your jetting working out with the FCR41 on the 400?

Regards,

Joe

haven't tried his jetting yet but may do this weekend. i tend not to rush things as i get older! i've been getting used to the camshaft for three rides and i've done a few other things as well.

tappets-don't think i've ever left them so long! after this weekend i have three weekends off so it'll come in to the schedule then!

yes i have touched the engine recently , i have put a brand new piston , camshaft , 4 new valves , and a brand new bigend in it , and replaced all ballbearings, .

the carb is a Dellorto 40 .

i dont think that the hoses attached to the carb have caught fire , because they dont seem to be burned , and they cant get near to the exhaust pipe ...
