My 1st two Supermoto races and experiences...

Since I bought my 05 650E, I have had 6 practices and 2 races here in Victoria, British Columbia. I must say that the 650 is an absolute monster on the track! I have gotten used to the transition from dirt to pavement, which is a little un-nerving. I have been running the stock Michelin Pilot Powers and must say that the work not to bad on hard pack dirt, and of course allow me to reach max lean angles on fast sweepers. Not to many of the really fast guys can even drag their knee. I have found that I am faster with my knee down verses mx style in certain corners, and of course other corners I have to put foot out. I have also learned to feather my clutch to keep the rear wheel from locking up on those hard braking sections-gearing down from 4th to 3rd. There are 3 technical 2nd gear 180 degree hair-pins wich have caused some problems as we go from pavement to dirt to pavment and hit the apex. This is where I have low sided several times.

I had my first BIG crash last Wednesday where I landed from a 30 foot table top and transitioned to pavement just past the landing. I changed lines to set up for the dirt berm/whoop section and the front started to tuck on the pavement (due to the dirt that was dragged on to) which caused major tankslaper which caused me to highside. I came down on my left side hitting the pavement and bouncing several times. I layed on the track not knowing how busted up I may be? After a rush of helpers came, I got up and collected myself to find no broken bones! Just severe whiplash, pulled groin, sprained shoulder, bruised knees, and a bruised back. I was lucky! If I was not wearing my Spyke leather suit I definitely would not be here typing! The bike was unscathed! Not a scratch on the plastic or pipe-thanks to the axle sliders, and Fastway Aluminum hand guards. I realized how much the pavement can hurt!

So after a BIG crash and a couple of low sides there still are no scratches on the bike! My only complaint is the shift lever! Every time I have gone down on the left side the lever has been pretzeled into the case. It is a ***** to straighten without worrying about bending the shift shaft. So how do you guys solve this problem? Last night I lowsided 2 corners before the checkered flag, managed to grab the clutch before stalling the engine to find out the shifter jammed in high gear against the case. This is annoynig, and cost me 5 positions!....I know....don't crash, but there has got to be a solution to the shift lever? Are there any stronger ones available?

Anyways thanks for any help, and our Husabergs rock! And by the way I lost my skid plate even after locktite on the threads, any better skidplates on the market than the Husaberg one?

One more thing I forgot to add: why the hell does the chain rub the frame just before the countershaft? If you all look on the inside of the frame you'll see what I am talking about! Is this a problem to be concerned about or will the chain eventually wear through the frame? Are there any guards being used to stop this?

AHOY! Fellow Victorian berg rider! I have an FS650 too and yes, power is not a problem! Keeping the front wheel down is. I just got my berg back on the road, maybe we'll see you around.

I have frame rub as well.......double check your alignment and chain tension as well......SM chains shouldn't get as loose as MX er's......I find in the manual it suggests a distance which makes it look tight compared to the other guys in the pits ??......If you are lowsiding that much, sounds like a suspension needs to be set up (sag etc) also and prolly more important is toss those tires and get slicks, those Michies suck !! You should have a 5" rear with a 160, right ??......the track up there is rough, like Port Angeles for us........You guys should come to Port A in two weeks......Also check your tire pressure, should be in the low 20's If they are going to goo quick then go mid 20's....just my two C's

Signed, the lowside king

The late model shift lever was certainly not designed to have the bike sliding down the pavement on top of it. If my memory serves me correctly, I have seen at least four shifters with the tip broken off in the past year. One of them was ruined by the illustrious Jedi on his maiden supermoto voyage, I seem to recall. In any case, BrianSM has a steel one on his bike, and it seems to be just the ticket for supermoto. It looks like an IMS or similar, I'm pretty sure it's not stock. Brian ? A pic perhaps ?

Cheers, and good luck with your racing - I'm sure I'll see you out there one of these days.

p.s. - How many spare shift levers am I taking to our AMA Pro races next weekend ? Four :)

You can build a nylon frame slider onto the front engine mount to keep the selector from hitting the deck

I have bark busters (fastway 1 piece jobbies) Authentic Berg axel sliders, and I have peg sliders on order......My shifter never gets a hit nor does my exhaust can...... 8O ........Maybe I'll post some more picts !!!!!
The bike is almost dialed in.....

You have peg sliders??? What brand and where can you buy these? The corner we go down on frequently gets covered in sand-therefore it is extremely slippery. I have been losing my rear end there, not my front. Frame sliders would definitely help-good idea. Are you using sport bike sliders. Also any brands of handguards which have slider material on the ends? My Fastway guards are already getting chewed up!

"UFO" are the peg sliders..... Sliders are made for your fastways........

Sliders are great but the bike picks up speed when it goes down....

J'son will see this and fix my gallery....can't load pictures ???? I got some up before ??? I will post when issue is fixed.......

Sweet, I'll be glad to see them! I have two spare levers now, and I am in the midst of fitting frame sliders to help, we'll see what they're like when I mount them! :D
