Muffler Packing

I have replaced the muffler packing (pillow) that came with the bike with the standard repack kit from my local shop. I am considering going back to the stock (pillow) since the repack I did didn't last for very long. Should I pack the muffler more using a second kit, since the one kit didn't really fill up the muffler area, or just go back to stock?
Thanks

There was a thread a while back about this - perhaps 18 months ago? Fairly sure it was since the ****** hacker attack of '04. If you can find it there might be more info.

I use fibreglass roof insulation in mine but if you ram it in too tightly it tends not to muffle too well. Also it tends to get eroded over time & gradually get blown out the spout. When this happens it gets noisey & the outside of the can gets hotter than normal.

Last time I repacked it I wrapped the perforated tube in a layer of woven welder's fire blanket, bound this on with thin wire then packed the insulation fibreglass around the outside. It seems to have worked well so far at stopping the insulation blowing out.

Hi John,

I use the Silent Sport packing. It costs more than the other stuff but last's a really long time. I think the stock stuff is made of the same design but it has a blanket around it . I just take the loose silent sport and pack it in with a dowel, not too hard though or it will make it tough to get things lined up and slipped back together.
