Okay I'll stop over reacting...

I got my jetting dialed in (well at least i think i do)

bike starts within a couple of revolutions on the button when cold as well as hot (still have to squeez the decomp lever a bit when it's cold but hey, it a restarter right) starts 2-3 kick when cold 2-3 kick when hot. no bogging no poping, no stalling, no hesitation good throttle response etc etc.

But my plug is BLACK sooty black... any suggestions I cant seem to get rid of the rich condition...

I haven't had it out for a full ride yet just short trips through the field by my house, No there is no more smoke. There was prior to my adventure and a bit the other day but none today.

do i need to have it out for a bit to see if it burns off? I thought it would happen fairly quickly. I guess i don't really mind a rich condition, I think it has always had it. as did my 98. I just hate it when i can't get things to work exactly the way they are supposed to... my wife calls me a "selective perfectionist" I don't mind an unorganized closet or when the sprinklers aren't working quite right, but my heaven forbid if my tools or the bike, or the car is messy or not working right....

I would take it for a good ride and see how it runs and the plug looks. Plug color can be decieving sometimes. Taffy has elaborated on this a couple of times. "selective perfectionism" thats me to a tee  .

ken

there is no problem with getting a plug colour on the SEM ignition system. as long as he understands what to look for in a plug colour and how to do it there is no reason that he can't get one.

trust that he fits a new one first of course!

i don't go by plug colour at all. i can't remember the last time i looked at it except when i do the tappets. that's the only time i see it out of the bike.

if i did a plug chop everytime i did a jetting change i would have been through 20, 30, 40 plugs.

as it is, in 3.5 years of racing i'm on my second and i fitted that 3 years ago!!!!!!!!!

even my oil filters-i'm on my second for the SEASON. oil every second ride, filter when i remember to get one.

strokes fer rolks i suppose!

Of course my plug is new... why would i go through the starting system in an attempt (successful i might add) to get her to start reliably off the button and not replace my plug.... hey, at least i sprung for the iridium and not some cheapo champion....

If color really does not matter i won't sweat it....

could be the main jet--- get out on some open smooth country and do some wide open throttle runs accelerate from about half throttle each time and check speed over marked distance if you dont have speedo or rev counter use some one with stop watch roll on in top gear change jet until bike accelerates the best then check plug if theres any question of to lean go one jet size bigger you can mark half throttle using twink on grip make sure you are running at constant half throttle other people may hve another way of getting main right

i didnt ask but if your carb has a accelerator pump and you are only doing short runs it may be the pump that ismaking the plug soot up so your jetting could be spot on

I thought plug colouring went out with leaded petrol

i think you mean "didn't plug colouring go out with UNleaded petrol?". well yes it did a bit! for racers it's easy, they get to 'feel' then see the difference in a plug going from unleaded to a 50/50 mix with avgas etc.

it's not so easy for the rest of us though! we start them and run them with just the one fuel. we have choke, we ride at slow speeds and the rings and guide seals can be very worn. oil is the bain of plug colouring!

i only go by feel and sound. you have to do an apprenticeship and you do end up buying jets that you don't need coz you wnet the wrong way! but it's good practice!

NZ
the old dell ortos from '02 don't have an APJ fitted.

Taffy i just thought he could have a fcr or other non std carb carb fitted

Well guys my goal of fixing my starting issues at altitude have been solved. one kick and she fires right up. on the button is immediate also.

Today I was 4-5000 feet and she started great!

but actually moving down the trail she ran like a really bad case of the hershey squirts. sputtering and hesitation and no power anywhere. she had a tough time even climbing the most moderate grade.

she seemed to do alright if i got her past 1/2 throttle but i could tell there was a lack of power.

it so bad i only rode for about 30 mins and had to go back and wait for 5 hours for the rest of the group.

when i got home i fired her up, it was a bit more difficult but really not a problem, but she ran A LOT better.

so

again here is my current set up

k35 needle clip 4th position
45 start jet
182 main jet
dr266 needle jet
35 pilot jet
300 float needle jet.

so any more suggestions

or would send the carb off to lineweaver be advised?

Also, as soon as i get the carb right. the bike is offically FOR SALE.

I have to sell it before i can up grade to a newer 05 model! if you are interested see my classified!

i ran a FC470 yeetsrday. first time i've ever ridden one. and i can tell you about the feel etc and hope it helps.

first of all-PRIORITIES

while you are piddling about with the jetting, the starting procedure will change and change again! so don't set the bike up around the choke and starting from cold but around running well when warmed up.

A must come before B.

the bike rode was also an '02 but if you look in the owners manual you will see that europe gets different jetting to the USA. ours is without compromise to emmissions pretty much.

have a look at those figures.

as for my ride WITH the euro jetting. well it started but wouldn't run for longer than 1-2 seconds. this means that the choke jet is too small.

secondly, the hit from a closed throttle was too viscious for enduro, MX fine maybe but enduro it knackering. the /30 cutaway is great on a 400 but too much on a 470 used for enduro.

if i was to correct this, i would go to a /40 cutaway and jet accordingly. might even take the 501 jetting as a baseline.

THEN i would do the choke jet last. it may even have muck in it but i was very kindly loaned the machine by a dealer so it'll go back untouched.

check out that euro jetting!

Taffy
