My Riding buddy and I rode to the summit (1493m) of Mt Hekla last weekend.
Mt Hekla is one of the most famous and active Volacnos in Iceland. It lets of its steam about every 10 years ( last eruption 2000 lasted 11 days)

We started on a trail through old lava fields and then had a long full throttle blast upp through the snow fields to the summit. We started fairly early in the morning before the sun had a chance to make the snow too soft but still any let upp of the throttle meant that you were immeadialty stuck.

a real memorable ride. I have put a few pics in the Iceberg gallery.

more info on Hekla can be found at the following web site

Hi Iceberg,

Awesome ride!!

Weren't you concerned about hidden rocks in the snow?

Where did you start riding the bikes?

Did you cross any of the streams?

How far was the ride round trip?

Hi Joe,
no we were not to concerned about hidden rocks the snow covered well. We were a little worried about crevass as the heat from the volcano does melt the snow from the inside. We new that some hikers had come across some crevass the week before.

We started riding from a place called Naefurhollt which is due west from Hekla. Rode north east past a ridge called Bjallar then over the ridge and along the south of the small lake by Bjallahraun then headed up the north west ridge of Hekla to the summit. We crossed one stream on our way back to the road 26 which we followed back to Naefurholt.
It wasnt a long ride only about 85 km and took us just over 2 hours.

It was however a spectaular ride. As the saying goes it the quality not the quantity that counts
