I was wondering where some good trails or singletrack were around the portland area. any help would be appreciated

I'm sure there's some fun stuff around Portland. But if you make it out to Hood River.... That's where the goods are!!! :-D

I ride most every evening after work...

Be sure to get on the OMRA forum. Lots of great info there about riding in Oregon, including that end of the state.
http://www.omraoffroad.com/ Plenty of single track up there, you will need to get together with a local to find the good stuff. And not too far from where they used to do the Trask ISDE qualifer.

There are some good places at Portland like dog mountain,it's a good place for hikers with a single track down.

And if you want to pack things up,I have a company to help you Portland Movers give you less worries and guaranteed satisfaction.Good day mate and a have a safe trip.

Some local spots

Browns Camp is prolly the closest, hence most crowded.
Upper Nestucca (Trask) has some good single.
Sand Lake on the coast for beach riding is closest for sand (also crowded).

2 of the best areas in Oregon(me thinks):
China Hat (East Fort Rock) near Bend is world class. Dusty as h-e-double-hockeysticks in summer.
For sand/dunes Winchester Bay is my favorite.

$0.02

Don't forget your OHV tag.(2 years = $10.50) last I heard the fine was $250.
