Is there a groove in the frame support of the damper collar that goes into the groove under the bearing race?

Not so much of a groove as it is just a slightly smaller diameter. You have to fiddle with the collar to get it in the right place exactly or it won't fit. And yes, it is a bit difficult to get it in there. Not a lot of wiggle room.
