motor dying

in your opinion what would you say would cause at motor to die at idle under hard braking. eg. doing a stoppie.

My thoughts are too rich a main jet combined with a high needle causing a little fuel to surge forward under the momentum caused by the hard braking. Or possibly from pilot jet? mixture screw too far out(rich)?

Persoanlly I feel the bike is runing lean on the pilot circuit and a bit rich on the main. I am going to drop the needle back to where it was when I was using the smaller main jet and try again.

I had her out for a run on Saturday after installing a 190 main jet and flushing the rads with new coolant. It ran like crap. Under hard accelaration it would sometimes just die like i turned the key. This is probably due to the main being increased. There is still backfiring from the exhaust (all exhaust joints have been sealed with exshaust gum) and I still have a white plug. This would lead me to beleive it was lean posibly just on the pilot curcuit?. I hate this carb already.

jets are 35 pilot
190 main
dr268 needle jet
k51 needle raised to 4th notch (was lean on 180 and 4th notch)
45 starter jet.
idle mixture screw 3 turns out
I also have an akropovic end can.
The bike is ran at sea level

I have ordered a 40 pilot which i will try next week
I miss the FCR on my old DRZ

not really enough info but i would hazard that your clutch is dragging and therefore a stopped rear wheel is a stopped engine.

the problem with tuning the dell orto is that changing one thing doesn't necassarily help. you gotta change a couple of things.

i would put it back to how it was and just try the pilot jet for now. you'll eventually build up a picture of what is happening.

go by feel and not the plug colour is another thing you must do. it can lead you up the garden path completely...

have you got the float height correct and are you sure the carb manifold is sealed i dont run any sealant in headers and other joints with the right pilot and screw sttings have no trouble with back fire 02 fc 470 i dont know how old your bike is if it is old the slide could be worn and letting air pass around it we need more info

A very wise old Englishman once told me this, and I will dutifully pass it on to you; Hating a Delorto is only the first step of mastering it. Hate is denial, denial is the roadblock to enlightenment. You've got to accept things you cannot change, and apply all your efforts and energies toward those which you can. You must become one with the carburetor!

I had the same issue on my 501, as soon as I hit a technical piece of trails at lower speed. Even sometimes by simply turning around in the sand. It did not make sense at all, so I sent the Dellorto to Dale and he tuned it up for me (see the infamous "... knows his stuff" thread), because I had major carburetor issues other than that any way (very hard starts).

I think it is a carburetor issue, and you feel it too, you've got to be right. If you rev up and slip the clutch (not during the stoppie, of course), does it prevent the problem? If it does, then I would suspect you clean up the carb and post your jetting numbers here, so the crowd can help.

Don't forget to take note of your number of turns on mixture and idle screws before you take it out.

I hope the only think you miss from the DRZ is the carb... Is it really an FCR on your Suzuki?

yeah the z had an FCR

Anyway the reason why it was dying was because of emulsified oil being blown out the breather and into the carb air intake and boot. It was getting into the chamber.

The head gasket has since blown and its being rebuilt now.

Use two pieces of radiator hose and simply connect one piece to the cover, the other to the frame. Insert some foam to prevent dirt and junk to enter the rocker box, and the frame, and put a piece of wire to hold it all into place.
