Moto X springs etc...

I just swapped my 04 Supermoto suspension for some bits of an American model FE450.

However, the rear spring had been changed to a "Supermoto"-spring. that is on an Enduro-damper.

How do I indentify the rear spring, is there a table or a chart somewhere?
More importantly, would a claimed supermoto-spring on a FE damper work on a Moto X bike?

Cheers :)

I expect that the spring should be a normal straight rate spring of whatever rate (is it stock?) FC & FE = 80/250 & FS = 88/250 but acts differently on a different shock, due to the different preload requirement for a FC / FE versus an FS, I think that the FC shock length(total length not stroke) is something like 401mm, whereas the FS is 390mm (probably due to a shorter shaft) and the FE was something like 400mm and preloads were 5mm for FC / FE and 11mm for the FS.

Azza.

The rear spring on both my supermoto bike and the rear shock I just swapped are both 84/250. If this spring us used with an FE damper, will that work for a beginner MotoXer like me?

What about front forks. Is the spring the same on a FE and FC?

Hi vegard,

spring chart is in owners doc I think. I like a softer rear spring than the chart with more preload for whoops. makes rebound tuning easier to have more prelaod on a softer spring.

84-250 is middle of range for "average" wieght rider, can't see why it wouldn't work with a bit of prelaod adjustment unless you are under 65Kg or 90+.

making it "work" and getting it perfect though are two different goals perhaps.

I think the spring differences on the front re FS/FE forks where discussed on here recently.

if a too short spring is used in a longer travel fork it may coil bind before full travel. measure the wire diameter, count the coils and calculate minimum spring length to check if its OK.

provided coil binding isn't a problem I'd just give it a go, make it fit with spacers etc and try it out. IMHO like all things suspension, spring rates are higly subjective and personal despite loads of information to the contary.

as always there is really only one way to find out if it will actuallly work.

HTH

regards
Bushie

This means that my rear shock is OK for MotoX as the spring is the same.

The front I guess is just a FE damper. If I increase the spring tension, would this be suitable for MotoX?
