I was just after some road ones for the moment, nothing too fancy. Maybe in 12 months i might start doing some social racing at clubs..

A set of SM wheels can cost up to $1200. Good thing eBay is here.
Now, many times you can only buy the rims and re-use the spokes and hubs from your current setup, but it forces you to make a choice and rededicate your motorcycle for a different use than dirt riding.
You can also supermoto with the regular 18 and 21 rims (I guess at least in the beginner class) and I have heard good things about the Avon Gripsters. It will be cost effective, but more labor intensive than swapping wheels.

From what you say you want to do I'd think cast wheels would be fine, but then I'm no expert. I've got a DVD of some motard races in Oz & it shows at least one bloke using dirt bike wheels & at least one other using cast road bike wheels. I've asked a few people who race as to why no-one uses cast wheels for racing & they say that they can break, but then none of them can say they have ever seen it happen. I reckon it is between you & the rulemakers as to whether you race on them.
The RGV250 rear is 0.25" wider than the standard 4.25" motard rim of 2000 thru to about 2003 but perhaps has a bit of a problem with the cush drive arrangement.
The RGV front is 0.5" narrower than standard 3.5". My FZX250 is 0.75" narrower but still the 120mm wide tyre seems to fit & work OK. The FZX front would be easier to fit on a mechanical speedo bike in that the standard speedo drive can be used. For the later bikes this is not such an issue & a pair of RGV wheels (like Vegard's) would be a good option.
For doodling around on the road the cast wheels are great. You can swap in less than half an hour. You only have to change the wheels, perhaps brake pads if the discs are worn differently, front sprocket (use same chain), fit or remove the spacer from the front brake caliper (use same calipers) and the mirrors.

Just remember LeFrog is talking US$. Best I could find here was about $1200 Oz for a second hand set of spoked wheels off a KTM. If you still want to persue these PM me for details of a good bloke just north of Sydney who might be able to help with anything SM. Check the Marchesini SM wheel set. I am reading a lot about Supermoto because it seems that my son (Kenny, 15) is interested in it and his WR 250F seems to be pretty good for that. I guess I may even join him when I have my 501

Cast or forged one piece wheels for anything besides straight street use is not advised, they can crack and break when used in hard pounding situations(Such as offroad use).
KTM motard wheels bolt right up to the 2001+ berg's and can usually be had for fairly cheap, just be sure to get the correct front wheel. 2001-2 models of berg's and ktm's had 20mm front axles, and 2003-up have 26mm.
