motard or full road bike.

hey peeps, as some would know I have killed my back and there is a very good chance that I wont be able to ride on the dirt for a long time if at all. I was thinking of trading in my 03 FE400E for either a motard or a full road bike like a GSXR750.

for a non raced daily rider that wont get the pounding my current berg copped I'm wondering what the comfort level and suspension of a motard is like compared to a road bike. I wont be able to cop very much jarring in my back so a soft setup will need to be the go.

any one got both to give an idea of the difference. If the motard is like my fe it looks like I'll have to leave the husaberg community for a while :(

Ps I love my berg but it's bruk and I cant ride it :crying:

If anything (un-fortunately) a 'tard will be stiffer. My FS650c will loosten my fillings.... 8O
If your back is toast a gixer (or any superbike) may be a bad choice. I usually end up stiffer after a day of riding one of my sportbikes than a day of supermoto (as long as I keep it off the deck!) I'd recommend riding a sportbike (assuming you haven't recently) before finding out it won't work for ya. Good luck whatever you get, back pain is a bitch.

I would think something like a VStrom or similar. The new Kawasaki thing looks good.
Also wear back support. I wear one for heavy lifting I got from Fastinal and if I forget to wear it,
my back suffers for a week.

ferret,
forget the sports bike....or most roadies for that matter. I have an R1 and it is rough on the body. With around 4 - 5 inches of suspension you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work out what will happen when you hit some rough stuff. The motard will be the go, just dial up the suspension to suit your back, EASY!
Whats the go with your back, what have you done to it ?

i think the upright seating position of a motard is heading in the right direction ferret
then you just going to have to soften up the suspension some and detune the donk......
and install a big soft seat.

but then you would have a yamaha xt and thats no fun..... hehe

maybe you should just try a test ride on drzsm...... might be a good comprimise.

not sure what's wrong with the back as the specialist is aparently out of the country, but basically they think I have a ruptured disck in my lower back and this is causing all sorts of cramping and other issues.

to give you an idea I thaught I would help the missus clean up as she's 6 months preggas and I'm an awesome husband :p so I grab the broom and swept a floor about 8 square metres and spent the next 2 nights in hospital. Until I get an MRI they wont know what the issue is.

Since I have to fix the berg before I modify/sell/trade in, I figured I'd get an idea of what the other bikes are like. If I can get away with it I'd rather keep my bike but money and new family comitments may change that. I was thinking of getting an NSR150 as a run around till the berg is fixed.

oz rider: I tried the R1 before I baught the berg and to be honest they're a pig, no offence.

Ferret,
No offence taken.
I agree they are a pig..... uncomfortable, rough and the same head shake issues as the ktooms. These things have a place and are a lot of fun on the right roads/tracks but it gets to be te same old same old after a while. Im over mine and rarely ride it these days because or the abovementioned issues..

that's sorta why I went the berg route. for the amont of power the little 400 had it handled the rd better than my cbr 250. I was sliding corners on the cbr at 90 + k's but the berg used to stick it. strange but true.

just for stupidity I put the berg down the drag strip and with a lot of wheelspin and a bit of valve bouncing she did 14 seconds.

Tough stuff with the sore back! Been there, heck I am there...mine goes haywire about once per year, usually after a long set of plane rides (over the pond)....really simple bend over, pet the dog, try to pull a wheelie, try to lift a little KTM SX65, out it goes, on my back for about three days....a real bummer. It didn't keep be from getting my recent ride. I, too, was worried about the off road jolting. But it has actually helped with my back, I needed more activity to make it stronger to withstand those long flights over the pond.... Be patient, a short time will tell if it will get better orif you can withstand going riding again.. In the meantime, it seems you have a little project to keep you busy. Since your 400 is an e-start, riding shouldn't be too much of a chore... Doubtful your wife will ever give you a broom again!
