More reports on newer FE550's please!

I've been keeping an eye on these bergs for some time, but I bought a new Husky TC450 earlier this year because of the price and great reviews, but I still feel the FE550 is better suited for my type riding and I wouldn't mind having one in the future.

I've read of one or two more recent reviews, but anything anyone wants to share about theirs would be great.

I'm still of the mindset that the 2007 is the one to get being they reinforced the bearing area, etc.

Have there been any reported failures of anything on the 07 550's? Or not enough reports yet?

The 06 I know most people say you'll never run into an issue with the bearings, but it still does occur from time to time, that is why I would likely opt for the 07...

The only Berg I've ridden is my buds 2000 FC501, which was amazing. (I think I might become part owner when my friends dad gives it to his son, my best friend, since it seems we share bikes like cotton candy. :D Otherwise I'm used to riding Huskies.

Regardless, let us know your likes/dislikes with the FE550! Thanks!

RE: More reports on newer FE550

San Diego? I would say a FE550e, or a TE510 or a KTM 525 would be great for open country. all three are much better then any 450 in the open, if you are a 450+ size rider..... meaning, if you are a small bike lover and realy prefer the 250-450 size range then never mind but if you like 450cc bikes then you will love the big brothers.

all three bikes are different and you need to ride all, research all. all the three are good open bikes, though the FE550e is the better woods bike... I can attest to that. I owned a TE510 and have riden KTM 525s

RE: More reports on newer FE550

Thanks for the post bigbob! Yep, San Diego, North county area... Poway Penaquitos area....

If I was looking at the 525, I would look back at the older 02 TE570's for the longer stroke motor instead....which I do love...but I hear the 525 lacks certain engine performance I'm now accustom to, and it also has inadequate suspension for this day and age. I was awfully close to getting a TE, a 450 or 510, but the gearing is just too close ratio for my liking, and again couldn't turn down the awesome price and the (non gear related) specs on the TC450...

I'm 210lbs + gear, hair shy of 5'10, been riding for over 20 years, and enjoy the beast within a bike, but also one I can ride casually if I want to. I like tractor power with subtle surprises somewhere in the powerband. Also, the feeling that there is always another gear to click up.

I do also understand the concept of riding a smaller cc bike (i.e. TC/TE 250) and gain speed/agility in the tighter stuff, but honestly, I'm not a competitive person with others or myself, I just enjoy grabbing a handful and hanging on, especially the higher speed desert stuff which requires a stable bike.

I'm not a woods rider by nature, but I imagine I will be doing about 50-50 desert/mountain trail this coming season, desert being my fav, which will be within Mojave.

Can you tell me about your experience on the 510 compared to that of the 550? I'm all ears.

What do you think about the fit and finish of the berg compared to the husky as well?

Does the berg instill confidence at all times? Which one "feels" like a bigger bike? One easier to handle than the other?

Which one gives a bigger grin or fun factor throughout the day?

Since I already have two huskies...I'm thinking the next husky I get will be a newer WR250 or when they come up with one, a wide ratio 500+cc 4s, otherwise I'm not excited about the new TCX models since they only have the TE gear spread, which ain't wide enough for my liking.

Thanks man...

Also, do you know the seat height of the 550? My TC is stinking tall. I will have it lowered an inch when I get it revalved...once broken in.

RE: More reports on newer FE550

the bergs are shorter, the riding position is more in what I call the little red wagon feel as You sit right in the groove for good turning. The Huskys are taller more spread out. So a Berg is a good bike for a medium height guy. I am 6'5" and the berg rides so nice, I get over the fact it's shorter more compact then my big tall husky was. plus I have berg bar risers and a berg tall seat.

Both the Husky and the Berg have a short stroke motor with a racy revy linear buttery power band, not much subtle hit anywhere just cholesterol packing buttery big and bright fast power in all gears.

the husabergs have a nice wide ratio tranny, geared tall stock and need to gear down some, The stock gearing and you never see 4th.

lets see the quality is excellent in both brands. Both bikes easy to servcie and maintain. the Husky has this planted like a running back or linebacker feel great feel and it turns great, The Husaberg has this quick moves like a shortstop feel, but still planted too. it rides real nice.

The Husky 510 has noticable engine breaking, the Husaberg has like no engine braking making the big 550 a better floating woods bike then the 510, but that 510 close ratio works great in the woods too.

you mention the KTM 525 exc long stroke motor.........it feel more tractor heavy like to me more directional not a turner like the Husky and Bergs are. I am not a fan of teh KTM 525 exc, but do appreciate the good all around KTM 450 exc.

The Husky rear suspension is linked and better then the Bergs. But the berg WP front fork suspension is better out of the box then the husky marrzochhi which you know are stiff.

Hope you can ride both, very differnt execpt both have a racy smooth linear powerband motor with deep arm pulling power yet both are very mangageable easy to cruse and have fun on.

I loved my TE510 in the desrt, it stood up and acroos whoops like a pro.

Have yet to ride my FE550 in the desert but did ride one there for a 1 mile.....I kinda liked my TE510 there more becasue I'm tall and need a tall bike.....yet my FE550 is definitely my prefeered bike of the two in the woods. It just is..

RE: More reports on newer FE550

BigBob, thanks for the diagnosis and breaking it down. You being taller, I can see how the Husky just felt natural to you. I like the spread out stability of the husky, but the tall seat thing gets old at times, so it's nice to hear the berg might physically suit me better.

Yes, I'll agree with you on the 450exc. The family I ride with, one member of the fam picked up a 07 450exc model this year, and I have to tell you, 95-100mph out of the box on a 450 is impressive. The 525 on the other hand, there just isn't anything that strikes me as amazing on the bike, other than the tractor pulling power. I'm not an orange kind of guy as you can tell by my bike history and where I've steered this conversation.

Linear arm streatching powerbands I definitely like.

I like the part about not seeing 4th! Now that's something I can get used to again, missing my 410 and 610 for that same reason!

Nice!

Enjoy your 550 man!

I have to agree with bigbob.

The engine brake of the 550 is less than of my 501.
Better handling in the woods.

My friend with a FC470 established this too.

He is enthused and will now a 550 too.

The 501 was too "longstroke" for him.

Traktor power is enough.

Power is good to handle (for a 500+bike) in first an second gear.

I tried last sunday a Sherco 5.1 (95 mm bore.)

very longstroke, sedate, slagardly.

The throttle way of the right hand is to big!
Difficulty to lift the front wheel in impulse.

Very smooth, good for relaxing enduro hiking.

But the owner and dealer of sherco was very quick with the bike!

All a funktion of habituation....

Husa....appreciate the confirmation on the engine braking.... also good to know on the 501. I've ridden that it and was very very linear, with no particular snap anywhere. But it pulls and pulls and it certainly hooks up. Also, deceptively fast.

Thanks for your 2¢! :)
