what the best way to get a bit more power from the 02 FX470?

I had a chance to get out and run some back roads the other day and I would like a bit more power from it.

agree with the cam and also put in a 501 crank for a displacement of -er!! -501!!!!!!

i have the keihin FCr carb which surely by now are exchanging on e-bay at cheaper prices? surely!

i can give you every mod detail to do to the carb but do expect to buy the carb and spend another $150 to get it right.

I don't think it would be quite as simple as that i'm afraid.

As far as I'm aware the 400 and 470 share the same stroke and therefore the same crank case sizes. The 550 and 501 also share the same crank cases with a common stroke.

Therefore in order to make it a 501 you would have to get new crank cases too. Oh, and piston kit (95mm rather than 100mm), or end up with a 550.

The lx1 is a good performance modification but to be honest, I would say the simplest route is just to trade your bike in for a 501 (or other larger capacity engine) and put an lx2 camshaft in it. We all know there's no substitute for cubic capacity

The Keihin FCR doesn't actually add horsepower (at least not in tests with the 650 engine), it improves starting and provides some benefits during acceleration and pickup when opening the throttle.

Cheers,
Simon

i realize there's no replacement for displacement, but I would have thought that being a 470, it would run harder and pull stronger than my DRZ400e that I used to have.

It's funny you should compare it to a DRZ400. When I bought my 01 470FX (sight unseen), I compared it's performance to a DRZ400. It turns out that the rings where shot and the valves tuliped. After the overhaul it runs strong and snappy.
My original response to your post was goint to be that if everything is dialed in properly you should not need additional horsepower. They seem to get with the program just fine in stock form.

I Agree With Berger,Check Everything Out Before Buying Exspensive Performance Parts.
We Have An '03 Gasgas EC400 That Seriously Lacked Power.
It Was Bought Off Ebay,Had A Quick Ride To Make Sure It Went In A Strat Line And No Nasty Noises From The Engine.
My Son Went On A Ride With A Couple Of Mates And Came Back Slightly Miffed,It Seems That His Mates DRZ-S Blew Him Away.
Turns Out After Checking Things Through That All Was Not Well With The Valve Clearances,About 0.25-0.4 To Large!!!.
Sorted That Out By Re-Shimming It,It Ran Alot Harder And Smoother But Still Lacks Real Bite That You Would Have Thought Nearly 10bhp Would Bring.
Needs To Go To The Dealer To Sort The Bloody EFI Out.
Not Done That Yet Since He's Bought His New VOR.
My Advise Is To Check Every Thing Over Very Carefully. I.E Valve And Carb Stuff First.

I have to agree with the others where make sure your bike is correct before worrying too much.

The drz400 is a superlative bike for its intended use, but your 470 should be a lot quicker than any 400 period. I would think very reasonable estimates would put your 470 at 8 more horsepower and perhaps thirty less pounds than a drz.

The Gasgas,On Paper Is About 7 Brake More Than A DRZ-S At 47 Brake.
I Reckon That The 470 Is About 5 More Than That About 52/3ish With Nice Low Down Power That More CC's Bring.
The VOR That We Have Here Is Nice From Idle To Mid,My 400 Struggles But At Top The Berg Fly's And Makes Up The Gap.
Have To Wait And See When The VOR's Fully Run-In Though.

well, not sure what the deal is, but went out today for a ride with the fellas and the bike ran like a scalded dog.

maybe it was just me looking for that 2stroke hit before and I was riding alone on open roads.

I dunno, but it all seems better now!!!

Old gas that can't vaporize fast enough at high RPM because all the light ends have evaporated off and the thicker remainding fuel making the mixture lean, will make any bike seem like a dog. If I leave my bike sit 2-3 months its dog city til I change the fuel. Maybe this explains the mystery? Of course valves always need the clearance checked on a Berg as does the air filter need cleaned.

PS Having ridden a friends 470, it has about the same power as my 501 up top with a bit less bottom end. Also has a bit less flywheel and spins up quick. I believe this is all a result of the short (60MM) stroke. Really a pretty potent engine.
