MK 1 FCR - no choke

the mk 1 FCR 39mm that I have doesn't have any choke fitted. Has anyone come across this before and does anyone have any suggestion how I can start the bike more easliy.

Currently I have to give it a few squirts from the AP and then catch it on the trottle and keep it reving for a few minutes to warm it up. Runs great after that.

i've had the misfortune to have to buy a new amal years ago for m,y old triumph 5TA. it had no choke system so having asked i was told to learn to tickle the carb.

so i drilled a hole down towards the float. in the amal's case it was a single arm that did both floats. i put a simple pin with a mushroomed head on it and a spring under the mushroom that pressed from the carb body upwards.

stopping the pin shooting out but inside the float chamber was a simple clip like the ones used for the carb needle. all you did was hold the 'tickler' down for 2-3 seconds and this opened the float valve. the float chamber got over rich and the bike started first time.

the reason i say this is because the Mk 1 has a brass tube that is treated as a breather and the angle is EVERYTHING YOU NEED.

all you have to do for a first try is to press the float down with an appropriate tool.

can't recall if the floats are independent though?

Dunno what you mean Taffy. But I know what you mean about tickling the carb having experienced both monoblock and concentric Amal carbs. Thing is; using the APJ like I am, is about the same as tickling the carb is it not?

I am curious to know why Kehin made this carb (and others I presume) with no choke circuit. Any suggestions?

well i went riding with arkley about 3 weeks ago (at easter) and i was using 60% of his fuel he does have a dell orto though. fact is, if you want good MPG you need to turn the apj off.

as for why they sold them like that? i would take a REAL stab in the dark here and say that they were made to be in banks of 4 and only one carb was ever made for choke out of the 4. a real guess but bullshooting prolly.
