raced with the banovallum club today at north willingham near horncastle, lincolnshire. beautiful weather and no breeze may have been good for the sun spotters but for us it was a nightmare. long straights on the farmers fields meant running flat out and totally blind, further, we had several corners where there was just a road of rubble and this was having novices off withpainful consequences for some.
there were, as there always are, several husabergs there. mark dean has a FE450 now, there were also 2 400's, 2 550's and a 650 (as well as mine!).
there were around 30-35 in the enduro class and we lined up for the off, i got a reasonable start and dived through into about 8th, i then took a gamble in what turned out to be a pile of rubble and logs-not a good move-back 4/5 places as i untangled the bike. after this i picked off a few but it was hard to say who r how as we soon caught backmarkers.
since last weekend i had re torqued the head down to 60Nm which my dealer recommended, also a new waterpump seal, a rad check, fresh oil and all hoses checked. alas it lost it's coolant again and misfired badly barely pulling the bike.
i used about 7 litres in the first 1.5 hour session and fell just the once when i tried to keep the brake on ina tight left at the bottom of a downhiller. oh! and i stalled it once and did a 360 in the grass. the competition was touigh and any mistake saw riders pour through.
the track, as said was a dust bowl but there was also a lot of qeueing which isn't good. the new sintered pads worked really well but they do shrill. (anybody use any anti-shrill platesbehind their pads?)
at lunchtime i changed to one of those denso iridium's as a complete gamble as well as the usual jobs, 3/4 litre of coolant was also added and it started straight away.
had the idea of pulling off in second in the afternoon but having caught instantly i wasn't brtal enough and stalled it. had to work hard to get through the field and was only caught by one 'four stroke' class rider. mark dean who always gewts me and damn near laps me couldn't get near me and finished the minute he started behind me.
what with the overheating engine, everyone was quicker down the straights, luckily they were all very short and i managed to weave and try and look slightly out of control! i said LOOK OUT OF CONTROL!
anyway, went better in the afternoon but no doubt about it the coolant has gone again and i think the engine is going to get fed up with this soon!
finished 6/35 or so, wanted better but without the power i couldn't get by people without a real struggle.
the new pads were good and as said last wek the 1" off each end of the bars is less energy sapping. i'm even thinking of going back to no spacers under the bars for the woods work. i have to sort this head/coolant thing out first though!
