Mechanical whining noise

Hello Gentlemen!

Knowing of all the Berg professors out there I am scratching my battered head; I have a "sound problem" with my old 2001 550 stallion.
After I ad to change the engine block of my trusty 550 fc 2001 berg to a 2003 block (bought from Taffy, thanks man!) I put all the internals of the old 2001 engine in. Upon starting it now, the engine makes a fairly high-pitched sound that is loud as hell. The more you rev, the higher the pitch. This whining noise is as loud as the normal sound that come out of the exhaust ! Would put old Pavarotti to shame.......

I sure would like the old "non whining sound back" !!!

I noticed that upon assembly there is a small friction between the kickstart gear wheel and the Intermediate gear wheel which connects to the clutch basket. This small friction is enough so that these two gears do´nt turn freely.

Is this the reason for this loud whining ?
Is it because I have a 2003 engine block with 2001 internals. Somehow I doubt it ?

Any ideas from you Professors would be highly appreciated!

I've seen that vid before.

It sounds like Intake noise. I would pull the seat and air cleaner off and see if it gets louder.

My 2002 650 did the exact same noise as the one in the vid. If it doesnt bother you, don't worry since it doesnt do anything. Btw I changed the sprocket assembly which comes at the e-starter and the noise stopped. The noise is made by some parts that dont fit quite properly.Read more here:

you have mixed your 2001 gears with stuff from later. you need to pull the two starter gears out and then start it.

= no noise I hope. :D :D

then you have a real dilemma.

the 2001 clutch basket, crank gear and intermediate gears as well as the sprague gear are all to be meshed a certain way. fitting 2002 stuff (any of it) makes that noise.

so remove to prove that that is the problem.

the trouble is, the 2002 stuff can't be made to fit because the intermediate gear is slightly different in having no shoulder on it. the intermediate shaft can be changed BUT that means stripping the engine! I can't recall the difference in the shafts as we speak though? something about a shoulder???? I've forgotten it.

it is surprising me, that you were not given clear, uniform answer. Mine has this sound too. I have no e-starter nor related internals inside engine. bros in riding husabergs have the sound too (all with e-starters). We have 2003-2008 in group, all freshly after rebuilt (crankcase halves were split). I consider this being absolutely normal and I pesonally like it as a typical feature for HBG. Even change of oil or outside temperature makes no change. Do not call it whining, but whistling and that can help you to not look at it as if it was engine suffering. Its engine enjoing its running time! As far as I remember, this sound dissapeared on my bike (for a short time only) after replacing the special bearing (with coin-like seal on it) on the balancer shaft (water impeller shaft).

Sound of mine before rebuild, now is quieter, but still basically the same.

Hi Friends, and thanks for all the replies.
I know that this whining sound (whistling as Mr.Edelweiss calls it) is "normal" on some bikes. But when you´re used to a quiet motor it´s damn hard to get used to this crap ugly sound. I could get used to it if it was my wife whining ( in one ear, out the other.......)

I might use Edelweiss suggestion and psychology and embrace this "enjoyment sound" but hell, I will fight this Sound Demon to my last dying puff !!

1; My FC 550 2001 has no el-start so that´s out. No el-start mechanism inside engine.
2; It´s not the air filter intake as we old-timers should know by now.
3; All the internals in the motor are from the old 2001 engine (which had been updated with clutch basket, crank gear and intermediate gears from 2002 to cut down engine noise due to better cut on the gear pitch. Very little mechanical clatter after this update. So I am quite sure that I have not mismatched the parts.

I will take Taffy´s advise (Thank you) and remove the starter gears in the kick start, then bump start and listen,hopefully to a beautiful deep-thrusting sound with no singing /whistling /whining.

I will let you gearheads know.

I think taffy was under the same impression as I that your bike had an e-start. I don't think the kick start will have any affect on this noise. If I had to take another guess I would say balancer bearing or balancer bearing set up.

I do agree, I have this feeling too. but changing all the 4 bearings (on balancer shaft and in balancer itself) may not necessarily help. New bikes do this whistle too. its a cosequence of specific construction design, I believe.

Hej.
Changed crank gear and clutch basket in my 501 -00 and got a similar sound, perhaps the crank gear is not perfektly alinged with the clutch basket?

in my bike I can say for sure the sound is not the balancer i chucked it in the bin :D

I did try to work out where it was coming from once and made a confident decision about it... I can't remember what it was though.. when I concentrate a lot and try to remember all I see is ******s

I used Taffy´s idea ( thanks!) and took the kickstarter gears out. Dragged the beast to life and........................ still the whining sound!:eek:

So now there is only one possibility left.
Upon assemble of the 2001 motor, I bought from Taffy the double counterbalancer bearing as I was told it would fit perfectly into the 2001 counterbalancer and make it more reliable. I have never had an issue with reliability in the older single bearings but now they are not available anymore so I had to buy the double version from Taffy. Well the damn thing did´nt fit at all so my only option (at the time) was to use a counterbalancer of a newer 470 donormotor i have which is a 2003 model. The double bearing fit perfectly, so in went the newer counterbalancer. This is the only part which is not from my old motor.

So the only explanation I can think of is that there is a different cut on the 2003 counterbalancer gear, which makes this awful noise. So meaning to do well I have done bad.... :giggle:

Damn ... Too bad.

Is this the same "bird in the airbox" kind of "chirping" sound I've heard some 'Bergs make during group rides here? Or is this a different sound? Quite mysterious sounds these wonderful animals make.

Hi Bushmechanic and thanks for your concern !

I am assuming that this awful high pitched sound is coming from the different cut in the gears of the 470 counerbalancer I had to put in. I am assuming this as this part is the only "new" part in my 550 engine.
All because the double counterbalancer bearing does not fit in the 550 2001 counterbalancer.
So I have´nt ripped the motor apart for this as I have been told that thishas nothing to do with reliability. But the sound is making me nuts!!
So next time, in with the single counterbalancer bearing again !!
