Managed to get the bike kick started today, it wasnt that difficult tbh, i had put it off for a few days whilst i cleaned her up. im struggling to decide for certain when im at TDC. Whilst we're on the subject please could you clarify im doing this all correctly! im sorry if this annoys the people who have answer this a million times, but my searches just throw up subjects that tend to just skip on and off the subject of starting. if i get good at starting the bike then i will do a vid of how to start it for the forum (in english) as theres nothing on youtube or the like that i can find ! (and trying to use a translator on the net and copying off the german guide turns up some funny translations haha)

(this was from cold with no choke)

1- im pushing the kickstart down until i feel its on its compression (decomp left alone)

2- allow kickstart to return to the top then pull decomp and then push kickstart down to approx quarter past/20 past.

3- let go of decomp lever and allow kickstart to return to top

4- give it a good kick and voila !

thats how i remember it all happening. my only problem is sometimes im getting what feels like tdc but then when i go to kick i really DO feel where tdc actually was.
and i take it i DONT touch the throttle when starting !? What about before starting, can you give it a couple of opens to get some juice through ?

See if you can get i idea from this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mc7lWONGHM

When i first got mine i was trying two hard, i used to get up on the pegs while the bike was on the stand and launch the kicker as if my life depended on it, and tehn my stand snapped.

All i do now is kick it while seated, dont even bother to find tdc, no throttle and no choke. JUst firm kicks sometimes 3 or 4.

If you bike is running sweat it will fire.

Easy

i've found a lot of difference in various models about starting.
i had a 98 400 that wanted to be primed on the choke and then started without it. (it had a mikuni carb)
my 98 estart 400 with a roundslide dellorto wanted to be started on the choke. both 400's didn't much care where you kicked it.
my 04 450 wants to start on the choke, and my 02 650 with an fcr carb does not. it needs primed and then off and kick.
any bike bigger than a 450 would start easier if the kick began just a hair past tdc (actually they all do, its just more important on the longer strokers). if you have a properly working autodecomp it is harder to know when you are at tdc since the exhaust valve is slightly open and the feel isn't positive. it takes practice. once you've got the drill down on where to start and have the jetting fairly close, they start quite easily

thanks guys. il have a look at that vid see how it compares with my technique. yeh mine started easily once i had got it right. I do struggle a bit finding tdc everytime but im sure that will come better with practice.
cheers both !

try using the manual decomp with a light pull. whn there is slop in the cable that means the exhasut valves are open. you will then start to feel where you are and it'll work out. just remember your 4 cycles and ever so gently pull that lever.

ahh i get you, use the decomp as a feeler for what position the engine is in. nice thinkin. I thought you meant be careful with the decomp or you'll break it haha.

just out of out of interest Taff, how many full 'throws' of the kickstart turn the engine over through one full cycle ? or am i going too deep here ?

don't really know but would guess either 3 or 4 on a good kick.
