mains housing gone oversize

I have a set of cases that i'm trying to save.

they are 550 cases and basically the mains can turn inside the case on both sides. I bought them with a ball main on the right and the crank was tethered to the left with the now infamous 'bullring'.

all the pressure went on the right main, the ball bearings outer race cracked all the way around the circumference and the middle line. this caused so much pressure on the casing that it cracked out to the front wall.

I've had the crack welded and machined down but I STILL have a problem. the mains are now a very loose fit in the right case and a little loose on the left.

so the idea is a new one for me and that is to have a 3mm radius of alloy removed and a new ring 6mm dia larger pressed in and 'loctited' in.

then it needs line boring so that the cases are aligned. they have very little to go off now that is 'true' we have to have faith in the outer left and right covers that were found to be 0.015mm out in places. also the oil seal holes on both sides.

anyway, I'll let you know how this goes! ;)

Sounds like a very solid way to repair mate.

Maybe even a candidate for some spherical rollers....

Best of luck with it

the problem is boring one case and then flipping the other to do that as well knowing it is in exactly the right position.

any toolmakers in the house care to comment?

cheers damo!

I assume the problem is that you have to bore the mains 'outwards' from the centre?
What I have done before is:
- bore one case half. Perpendicularity is critical.
- securely clamp the second case half joint upward, to the mill bed.
- bolt the other case half on top
- use an L shaped probe to reach through and find centre from the 'top'case bore
- remove the 'top' case and machine the bottom to your centre datum.
Complete waste of time if you can't securely clamp things level, your DRO is inaccurate or the casing dowels are not a tight fit!
