At the moment I am rebuilding the engine in my 03 FSe650, now I ordered the main bearings through the dealer and he sent me the ball bearing type, the origional ones are rollers. Phoned him to get it sorted and he reckons that the ball type are superior to the rollers and thats all he fits (he does build a LOT of engines) any one heard of this or any opinions?

Regards

Yosh

Hi Yoshie.
"he reckons that the ball type are superior to the rollers"
I dont think this is correct.
NJ 206 Roller bearing it has 44KN dynamic load rating and 36.5 static, and the 6206c3 ball type bearing has 20.3 dynamic and 11.2 static. The roller bearing has more than twice the load capacity of the ball type.

Roller bearings will take a greater radial load but will not take an axial load, so if you don't shim the end float to 4 thou, they'll give up

yoshie, you ought to know better and get them from BSL :D

the reason they have been knocking them out is because the rollers MUST be perfectly aligned in the cases whereas balls are ok under a multitude of conditions (and cock-ups!) so in a way he's right. he comes from the 'don't fix it unless it was broke school and just to remind you-the ball races had very little trouble and the rollers have been going wrong everywhere!

man knows his stuff!
