Main bearings...Whats the verdict?

Firstly, sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search on main bearings and came up with about a million hits  .
My engines currently fitted with ball bearing mains.
Should I replace with rollers and if so do I need to do any mods or will they just fit straight in there?
The doc says that they were factory upgraded to rollers but it doesn't say if this was better or worse  .
Final verdict?

coastie, there is a lenthy topic on this and IMO you will never get a sraight answer from anyone.I used what i would call a pro engine builder who specializes in single cylinder motors and put *** rollers in as this is what he does with all the race motards that run bearings.

Hi madmark
Yeah I've seen the threads and no-one seems to agree.
There's been 2 balls, 2 rollers, 1 of each and even spherical got a mention.
I didn't mention that I don't race and I'm on the dirt - no motard - just social enduro with minimal road use.
Basically I want the easiest solution. I pretty much want to just stick a new set in there and go riding.
I don't want to have to use arbors and check if the cases are out of alignment or stuff like that.
I know that balls will allow more axial tolerance but handle less radial load and rollers are vice versa.
I want to know whether or not the rollers can just be put in there by a backyard mechanic safely without the fear of them instantly exploding or must everything be checked if upgrading to the rollers or if I should just put a new set of balls in there since that's what's already in there???

Hey Coops,

Have you experienced any problems with your ball bearings?

I remember an old motto - it if ain't broke don't fix it

New ball bearings are easy to fit, with some heat. Heat the cases and they should just nicely drop out. Reheat the cases and drop the new ones in with perhaps another reheat to make sure they're set OK. Then install your crank (but without smacking witha hammer, just push or press).

Ball bearings are decent solution and they are fine, in my opinion. But of course that is never a guarantee.....

And by the way, there will not be a verdict on here at least. I think the true solution is way beyond the resources most of us on this forum have available to us and it will ultimately lie with those that have the necessary R & D facilities.

All the best,
Simon

Hi Simon
Haven't had any problems with the balls - I'm tearing it down cos I had a rocker bearing fail that destoyed the cam and put metal thru the engine.
Since there's bad reports I thought I'd better change them before Murphys Law started applying.
Now I'll just have to decide between 8, 9 or 13 balls.
Any suggestions?

Coastie,

If it were me I'd simply go down to my bearing shop and ask for a pair of premium quality 6206 C3 (or even a C4) from the likes of SKF - they've always done me absolutely fine and they don't cost the earth either.

Or even the same as you have just taken out...

Hope this helps,
Simon

IF IT HAS ROLLERS PUT ROLLERS BACK IF IT HAS BALLS PUT BALSS BACK,THE MORE BALLS THE BETTER AS LOAD IS SPREAD OVER A GFREATR SURFACE AREA ,ALSO I WOULD THINK BALL TYPE BEARINGS ARE BETTER PURELY BECAUSE ALL JAPS USE THEM AND YOU DONT SUFFER THE CROWD EFFECT OF ROLLERS ALSO THERE MAYBE SOME MODS DONE TO YOURS THAT YOU DONT KNOW ABOUTTHIS MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS IF YOUY DONT FIT LIKE FOR LIKE ,THIS BIT SHOULD BE IN CAPS MAKE SURE YOU USE METAL CASED BEARINGS NOT NYLON (I MEAN THE BIT SEPERATING THE BALLS)AS NYLON ONES ARE WHAT APRILLIA USE AND FAIL ALL THE TIME I HAVE REPLACED THESE AND METAL ONES ARE A LITTLE MORE NOISEY BUT LAST FOR EVER (WELL A LOT LONGER THAN NYLON ONES),,, FEEL FREE TO IGNOR THIS IF YOU GET A BETTER SUGESTION AS I AM A LITTLE DRUNK ,BUT I DO HAVE 12 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE BIKE TRADE .......THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!PS SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS EVERY WHERE

Simon
Yeah that makes sense. If I put back a fresh set of what I take out then I can't go too far wrong.
They are 9 ball bearings.

Farfast
You gotta stop using capitals.
Thanks for the tip I'll make sure they have steel cages.
What's a little more noise on a berg?

Thanks again

Coatie ,at the end of the day all i did was replace what I took out rollers with rollers the only thing that changed was the bearing manufacture for me and the fact that the crank was balanced more acurately than the factory would do it.

Hi madmark
A few guys in other threads have said the *** bearings are the ducks guts also.
I'll ask about them at the bearing shop and see if I can get them.
I'm just gunna put the balls back in and I shouldn't have any dramas - no new ones anyway
