Maico motard, opionions please

Hi
A mate of mine who used to be the local Husaberg agent has asked me to do some research for him; he not so good with a computer. What do you guy's think of the new maico's as a motard bike, for street and track. Motard has really taken off in South Africa and this brings oportunities.

Any info on the current maicos will be appreciated.

I've heard that Maico has serious quality control issues on their new bikes. There was a guy over on the KTM site, a vintage Maico collector, who bought a new one and had huge problems with it. He ended up machining and making some of his own parts to get the bike to run, but he said he wouldn't ever buy a new one again.

Even worse the Husaberg during their dark period.

I wouldn't let one or two bad stories kill a chance at a good bike. A few good write-ups on performance and extended testing would work wonders. But it has been so long since Maicos were known as good bikes, I think that the only real potentials would be collectors dreaming of their old rides. A truly good bike would have a chance....but it surely would not be easy or cheap.

every ones heard that, but thats refering to the bikes back in the day.
now-a-days maicos output is so small that i doubt if any of the 2755 members of this site even know anyone that has a modern maico.

have seen pics of an '04 one , can't find a link at present, and they look reasonably smart. appear they are well specced.
how they go or hold-up only an owner could tell us.

done a bit more research and it could be that they are nolonger being made.
this lot seem to have aquired alot of the newer bits -www.koestler-bikeworld.de- whilst bill brown in the uk deals with the older bikes.

2007 models are available , some come with w/p susp and you can also get them with a reiger rear shock . the maico boys claim the reiger rear shock is very good .

i stumbled across this geezer with a 2t 500 maico 04 , he says it's a good thing .

and yes i was referring to the maico's of old when i said MAICO BRAICO , i actually raced a adolf weil 250 maico many years ago . the suspension was plush and it was quick in it's day .

and was it reliable :roll:

Maico's Rock Ive been completeing in the Southern Twin shock championship on a 81 490 for about 9 years know, I won it in 2000 and came 2nd at the "kings of the castle" at farleigh. OH the memories. lol.

As for the new 1's i have heard alot of bad stories, My dad is a Maico specilist and wont touch the modern stuf, infact anything after 1985 he says is *****. lol.

Maybe an idea to contact them?
I've seen a couple of post-2000 model 500's on ebay and they certainly LOOK the part.
I was thinking about trying a Maico when I was looking for a 2stroke, but i ended up wth a Honda CR500.
Honda build quality and readily available parts swung the decision for me, but the new Maicos are something a bit rarer if you're looking for that sort of thing.

Wow, "new" Maicos is certainly a question mark their fellas, their exactly the same motor and frame wise as the late 80's Maicos. Have ran maico/Zabel motors from 490, 500, 610, 620, 685 and the 700 motor in sidecar motocross for number of years. Engine wise they are sound, nothing much wrong with them i bought a brand new 500 maico with hydrolic clutch fitted for Ã‚Â£700 back in 2003 for me chair, frame wise from what i heard is terrible handling, mega vibrations
