I just bought an oversize clutch mastercylinder yesterday from the big Magura suppliers here in the Uk named 'venhill'. you may have heard of 'venhill' cables etc.

I mentioned that the M/C was going to be a brake M/C when fitted and she said that all she had to do was change the membrane inside to brake one. the seals etc are already for brake fluid etc. apparently the membrane doesn't like brake fluid and that'll explain the black powder type rubbish I could see in my brake fluid.

so when ordering for LHRB use remember to specify the 'brake' membrane.

Is the membrane she's referring to the seal/gasket between the reservoir and the cap?

in a way yes. the membrane is doing your job as well as being an anti-slosh and anti-aeration part. in the bottom it says 'for brake use'. so you really do get told.

When I installed my Rekluse and LHRB I used the original clutch master cylinder without bothering to change any of the seals over to brake fluid compatable ones. I've had no issues but checked the fluid just now and although there is no "black powder rubbish" the fluid does seem darker than it should after only 7 months.
I'll keep an eye on it while trying to source the brake fluid rated membrane. Thanks for the tip Taffy.
