Magura hydraulic clutch upgrade questions

Any of you out there swapped out your cable clutch for one of Magura's hydraulic units? If so, how do you like it? Worth the money? I am considering one for my '98, but wanted some first hand reviews.

firstly, i have a 2003 fe501e, with hydraulic clutch.

It is smooth and predictable, and doesn't "gum up" and require constant lubrication to keep it feeling light.

cable clutches feel pretty cheap after riding the magura for a while.

on the other hand, i don't know if i would invest too much money into it just for the sake of it. think i would live with a cable if had it.

why not add a bit more cash and upgrade to a newer bike??? i don't know an exact price but you could bet it won't be cheap.

i disagree with jeff

i had a '99 WR400 and went from cable to magura and the difference was fantastic! if i went up a nadgery rock face or was turning left and right on EXTREME lock i could just feather the clutch and it was ace-o-lux. it's one of those things that benefits both racer and trailer.

jeff also needs to remember that they're far cheaper to purchase in the USA than in the rest of the world and now that we have e-bay and owners sites we can very often get nearly all our money back when we come to sell.

Hi Barry,

I can recommend a hydraulic clutch. It is a very nice detail.
If you have one you never want to miss it. But it will cost a bit.
Maybe you get a used one on ebay or so.
Upgrading the magura clutch is relatively easy, but you have to
disassemble your engine.
Do you know someone who is a milling cutter? He can mill your crankcase
so you can adapt the clucth cylinder to your engine.

Does anyone happen to have a picture of a Magura clutch installed on a pre '01 bike??? Possibly a close-up shot? Even a newer bike would be nice to see...

Thanks for the replies. The unit I am talking about is a self contained, "bolt on" replacement: slave cylinder, hydraulic line, and master cylinder/lever assembly. I already have 3 new bikes with the juice clutch; I was wondering if anyone had converted their older cable bike to the Magura kit, and if so how did they like it.

Guess I just ought to buy one and tell ya'll how it works out.

Magura clutch

Barry,
I am working on the same set up on my '95 501E and my '91 499FC. I am using a Magura rig for a CR 250. I had no idea where to start, so I chose the Honda unit because I figured if I can't get it to work, I can always resell the unit. I now wish I would have bought a Yamaha unit though because the Yamaha clutch actuation mechanism is closer to what Husaberg uses.
Anyway, I've almost got the Honda unit working. I used the original lug that the cable fits through on the cases to support the slave cylinder using some hardware I fabricated. The problem I had was that the angle was too severe between the slave cylinder pull rod and the clutch actuator arm and I believe that under sustained use, the pull rod would damage the slave cylinder. I will be working on the set up some more and when I finish, I will post some pics. I think I am going to have to make a bracket to hold the slave cylinder perpendicular to the clutch actuation arm. I believe I can mount the bracket using the old clutch cable holding boss and the top bolt on the ignition cover. I may also have to make up some kind of guard to protect the whole mess. If anyone is interested, I can probably make up some of the parts for you guys.
Regards,
Al
