Hi fellow berg owners. I have to replace the o ring in the clutch slave cylinder on my 09 570 so will be needing to refill and bleed the hydraulic clutch but the oil from the dealer is expensive $38 for 75ml, are there alternatives to using this oil, will any mineral oil do the job

Hi

Try to find some car oil used for automatic transmission, or oven in the steer.

It's one ATF or better ATF II type of oil, it's red and it will do the job perfectly.

Hmmm...my 09 FE450 has a Magura, and right on the cover it says "Use Mineral Oil Only". I have always just used Mineral Oil found at Drug Stores....it says right on the bottle 100% mineral oil.

i think you are saying you need mineral oil.
as stated, common at drug store.
you can also use baby oil b/c i think its only mineral oil with fragrance.
there is a risk of using baby oil though.
i brought some to fr4.
it leaked in the parts box so it smelled the room a little.
thats not the risky part.
cypher came into the room, smelled the oil, got a big smile and some crazy notion.
ran into the bathroom, ripped the shower curtain off, threw it on the floor, covered it with the baby oil.
i'm not sure of the outcome b/c i ran out of the room when he started to strip down at record pace.
he was screaming for some help. i guess it was some kind of 'call of the wild'.
within 15 seconds mr. smooth was running in the room with a pack of big ballpark franks.
whats weird is they are both vegeterian.
appartently mr smooth doesnt mean his riding style. as he ran to cypher in his g-string you could tell he had a brazilian wax [you know like when the wife clears the landing strip] everywhere. i proceeded to puke in my mouth and look for a stick to gouge out my eyes.
so with all the possible problems, the dealers cost might be cheap.

$38 for 75ml? Are you sure it wasn't $38 for 750 ml ?

I bought the small jug of the magura oil, then mixed it 2 parts Amsoil Universal ATF to one part magura mineral oil. The additive package that's in the ATF helps with lubricity and oxidation.

I have run that same mix in my 01, 04, and now 09's with great success.

Shimano makes a mineral oil hydraulic fluid for brakes. $6 for a little bottle at the bicycle shop. Have 2/3rds left after changing out all the oil in my clutch. The drugstore mineral oil is much thicker and will not let air travel up the line. Make sure not to drop or shake the bottle. Maybe let it set for a day or two after buying it if that's what you use. Then push it from the bleeder up to the master cyl. with a syringe (from feed store)

I like the ATF idea though.

Castrol do a mineral oil advailable from Ford dealers seen it in a oz for around $30 for 500ml.

Thanks for the replys, the baby oil and shower screen may come in handy later but not for this particular job and yes here in Australia the genuine Magura oil really is $38 for 75ml from the berg dealers, gotta love a bargain

Hey Coops I use BP Bartran HV15

in a pinch you also could try a very light weight fork oil.

Auto tranny fluid for me. Never had a problem with it and been running it for years. The added bonus is that it is cheap as chips.

Tried the Baby Oil thing but the oil was thicker and made the clutch pull harder. Since that time, we have been using 5 wt fork oil. It works great.!!!

I've heard baby oil can fail in the slave cylinder and leak out when it gets hot. Anyone else heard of or seen that?

Hi

I've tried light fork oil, but as I told earlier, search for ATF or ATF II oil, its the one that you want.

Hi thanks for all the input, I ended up tracking down a full kit with syringes, magura oil, fittings etc for the price of a bottle of oil. So job done the clutch is working again and ready to roost
