Mag conversion possibilities?

Just a thought.........................

With the continual PITA trouble with stators etc. ....now me too!....has anyone thought about using a separate proven magneto system say, belt driven from the crank?

I'm going to experiment with this idea as running even an ancient Lucas mag has got to be more reliable and give a fatter spark too boot than the Husaberg rats nest we struggle with.....if you have any ideas (constructive!) that you want to pitch in, pls feel free.

I'll keep the thread posted if I proceed/succeed/recede.

there is someone in australia who re wires the SEM better than new.

what about all the muck? why not go look at some jap stuff? surely that's a far better idea?

i was always told a good engineer was a man who could do something for 6 pence that someone else did for a guinnea!

i haven't had one go yet and my bikes 3 years old. i can get another unit off ebay for £30.

sorry roy. can't see it. how about kitting the bike out with a good jap ignition from a jap bike? or go KTM?

what about a complete vortex ignition system from australia (if they do one?) i know that dale can do graphs for them.

Taffy,

Lots of possibilities exist and I'm sure the bike breakers etc. will glean something that will do the job. I haven't looked into the subject in any real depth yet. The vortex system sounds good, (you can get their systems from Motocross World in the UK) maybe even boyer have something that might suit - their CDI system does not need a battery, but on the other hand....

I like to experiment...never been a simple bolt-on person. I get great satisfaction from actually designing, manufacturing and producing a piece, probably more than I do or did from racing itself. My past career of buiding, developing and racing bikes and cars has taught me that if you can marry best effect with simplicity the result is always reliability. Other than my duke I'm new to big 4st. thumpers but my learning curve is exponential and I relish the challenges these machines present. Who knows, maybe we can come up with something that is effective AND cheap? (doubt if I can do it for 6d though!)

From what I've read so far, you have that same passion for experimentation directed at carburation Taff, I'm sure you understand where I am coming from.

for sure roy, i'm right with you on the experiment and even on the passion but i've been misdirected a few times myself and i hate to see it happen in others.

it's a disease i try not to pass on but live with quite happily. i would love a programmable ignition on mine as long as i'm not running total loss. mind you i doubt this machine will ever see lights working on it again!

remember that these machines are very close to ktm and so that might be a grewat baseline.

Outfitting the Kokusan of late to early model engines has been done successfully. Search this site for more information.

I have the makings of a kit, however, I have yet to find the time and / or motivation to manufacture it.

Quite honestly it all comes down to passion as profit never seems to be a part of the equation. I still have 5 out 10 hand built FCR carburetor kits. Sure am glad I did not pop for the production run of 500. :?

Best Regards,
Dale

Thanks Dale......I'll dig up some info on the Kokusan first. I know exactly what you mean regarding the R&D returns but if the experimenters of this world dont try, who will?

I still have not ordered the FCR's yet but I will be getting back to you for the kit when I do.........one day...promise! There again there are thgpughts buzzing with the possibilities of injection or a split Weber DCOE or even, or even, or even.......................

Whatever you do Dale, dont be discouraged, keep on pondering!

Take Care, Roy

Hi RoyN,
Not at all discouraged simply frying some bigger fish is all. :D

I am currently working on two high end ECM systems (including data Logging) for V2 application. Said systems are suitable for a single albeit quite pricey.

Sincerely,
Dale

PS
My Kokusan conversion utilizes a Vortex box as I am a licensed owner of Vortex software.

Wouldn't you know it!

Took my 2000 501 out for a spin and the stator failed during post ride servicing.

Thats the 3rd stator failure I've had on that bike and its probably going to be the last! This stator only lasted 35 hours, 1054 miles.

I guess I will have to look into some alternative ignition along with the rest of us.

Well, at least I have my 04 550 to ride in the mean time, its just that I had fallen in love with my 501. Its such a sweet ride!

Regards,

Joe
