well dropped the oil on the berg last week and got a shock lots of what looks like bearing material on the sump magnet, small shiny slivers of metal. 8O got to say the bike has had a hard season and a half but the valves are checked ,and its oil dropped every second ride .ive got three good events comming up so i reckon its best to take a look further. had a quick look at the cam followers in the hope, but there fine , therse no noise from anywere it still go's like a train ,burns no oil ? well ill keep you posted and try to take some pics when its in bits . the bikes a 04 501 with i reckon 150 hours only a guess as i go by brookster who only keeps his bikes for about 30 hours then chops in and ive lost count how many he has had now his life is orange poor lost soul

Well, keep an eye open. Perhaps the next oil change will shed alittle more light on he situation. It sure sounds like cam follower bearings though, and at 150 hours, they are about due for change.
I had an 02 FC550 that shed metal from day one, so much that you wouldnt think it had any bearings left at all. After about 25 hours I had it torn down and we never found the source. I updated the cam sprocket, rockers and mains and the bike is still running strong. After that I am reluctant to tear a berg down as long as its not making abnormal noises and runs well.

The longer I run mine the less splooge I find attached to the magnet.
I'm almost up to 50 hrs I think.

Take an old used filter apart and see what is in there as well.

well got to the bottom of the problem the main bearing on the ignition side was starting to break up, the balls have bits missing, forgot to say in the first post its had the main bearing mod done by our main dealer when the engine filled with water. not sure if the 04 comes with a roller bearing on the ignition side standard this was a roller that failled. On primery drive side there is now a spacer and larger dia oil seal this allows the crank to be pulled up tight no end float .I worked out this bearing has had about 60 hrs on it ,having stripped my 02 470 things in the 04 engine seem a lot better made tollerence wise, the things that need changing are the cam chain the big end / small end still in limits as is the piston, so looking at the ridding done on this motor not bad at all iam thinking of putting a roller on the ignition side just to help things

well just to let you all know how the rebuild went , busy week at work left a little time on fri to put the bearings in the cases and sat to finish the rest ,a day of mixed fortunes first **** up being put the inner race on the gearbox output shaft on the wrong side :( so had to split the cases again, then lost the preload tension on the kickstart shaft, clutch off after fitting all the rekcluse , not a happy bunny but heh these things are ment to try you,got the lot boxed up by about 3 ish and ready to try , now having a few onlookers , anyhow turned it over a few times to get some oil about and hey presto the berg starts first kick :D sounds as sweet as a nut .ran the bike on sunday 3 hrs hare hounds came in 3rd in e3 class but beaten by brookster on one of these orange things :? so it should be well run in
regards steve
