Currently a Yamaha WR400F rider in Colorado. Just looked at a FC 550 2001 at my local dealer. Nice looking bike but I have no knowledge of Husabergs whatsoever. I've became a member to possibly gain some info on this bike. They are asking $2500 for it. I've never seen a Husaberg before this on except in magazines. What's the 411 on this bike and is this a good price for it?

a true 2001 has the bubble blue decals and may even have a blue fuel tank. it's the first year of avery heavily modified engine and that engine we have today.

at the foot of this post is a link to the owners doc. from here you can learn about what you can do to them.

i would say that you know it's a 4-year old bike and so you take an acceptable risk i trust.

mechanically: the hard stuff is good inside. no problem. but you could suffer from several little jobs that need to be done. the owners doc will tell you how many are 'red' for danger and amber for a 'caution!'

have go at it if the rest of it seems fine.

put it another way! i ran a '99 WR for 2 seasons and besides a drop in power i never ever have regretted the change to my 400. the 550 will be a beast still compared even to the wr400 though...

regards

Taffy

Here is a pic of my 470 from the 05 Force Ride. All detailed out, ready to go and no one needed a bike to ride

The 01 tanks were yellow. The 2000 tanks were blue :)

wkloiber,

I have the same bike you speak of but mine is an '02 year. Are you married? Do you have children? If you have answered yes to either or both of these questions than DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE. If you do you will soon find yourself going through a divorce and possibly paying child support as you will be gone for weeks and months at a time :D from ear to ear and your wife will leave after the third month of absence. There is no remedy for the addiction you will have for this bike except to continue riding it. I am terribly sorry for this bad news......... :(

All joking aside, The deal sounds fair to me. I would ask the dealer if he knows wether the bike has the upgraded rockers & roller bearings and if the counter balancer bearings have been upgraded to the double row or if the counter balancer has been removed completely. Those two items and the SEM stator, which is known for its extremely short life, ask if he is willing to show you the condition of the stator (3 allen bolts on right side) check for any water damage, cracking, or anything that looks like it might soon go ka-put on you. These three things are, for the most part, your major concerns. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Hi,
the 2001 models are kind of disreputable (at least in Germany).
The reason for that is to be found in the mentioned counter balancer.
Many bikes were upgraded by the dealer as a warranty claim.
The rocker arm rollers are a topic for itself all the time. (also in German forums)
But: Husaberg has maintenance sheets! Just follow the guidelines and everything is fine.
And a last weak point is: some crankcases had hairline cracks in the region of the swingarm bearing and front sprocket, especiallly 2001 and some 2002 models.
It´s a could, not a must. I think there is a coherence between swingarm axle-tension and a crack in the case.
Nevertheless: the 2001 models are often unbosomed as nice bargains!
2 friends of mine are really happy with their bikes. They run really well. No problems.

good luck and have fun
