Hi UHE friends,
As a few of you know, I recently took a trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to visit my good friend Colby "Cheesberger" who lives near Crested Butte which is also very close to Gunnison. This was my first visit to this beautiful state and I've gotta say it's granduer is quite impressive. The best way for me to describe our four days of riding are to include pictures with captions. Some pics will be of the spectacular scenery without the blue and yellow machines but I'm sure you won't mind.
Day one, 100 miles
Cheese had made arrangements to meet a friend in the ski resort town of Aspen for breakfast with the pretty people so we headed out. Right off the bat we hit some awesome single track as we made our way past a sweet pair of mountains called Double Top. Oops, my camera batteries are fried so I'll have to buy some new ones in Aspen.
Anyway, the scenery was magnificent as we headed past Taylor Pass and finally got to the top of a ski gondola and dropped rapidly down a gravel road to town. We had huevo rancheros, walked through town in our dirt gear and laughed at a rack of fur coats. Okay, okay I finally replaced the batteries in the camera so heres some pics of the ride back to Crested Butte.
This is heading back towards Taylor Pass on a Jeep road. Colorado has a ton of Jeep roads which are actually mining roads of a bygone era.
Awesome mountains!
Colby Cheese shows his appreciation for living in an incredible area!
Nice view from my cockpit.
Cheeseberger shows me the location he had ridden to the prior week after a hards days work. He had seen a herd of some 100 elk twice that week. No such luck this day.
Day 2, 150 miles
Cheese, his friend Conan, and myself trailer the bikes to Lake City for a sight seeing tour of the San Juan range of the Rockies. We were on jeep roads this full day but there were no disappointments as a lot of these jeep roads have a bit of challenge and the views,,,oh the views! We visited the towns of Silverton, Telluride and Ouray. Lunch and ice cream were devoured.
Cheese on the left and Conan checking out the scenery.
I think these are the Red Mountains.?
2008 was a very big snow year! We are heading over what I think was our 3rd major pass of the day into the town of Telluride.
Yes, that's Telluride way the heck down there. We'll get some ice cream and fill the bikes with gas.
Making our way down the hill which was a series of switchbacks that was dynamited out of a solid cliff! Always cool to see the mine ruins as well.
This was originally a powerhouse supplying power to the town of Telluride but is now a private residence! Colby and I spotted a Swedish flag flying on their deck. Nice to see the blue and yellow! I hope they don't have too many wild parties on their deck as someone could take a serious spill......... BTW, the power station still makes electricity and the waterfall is called Bridal Veil and is the furthest drop in Colorado.
Cheeseberger making his way past a little snow drift.
The gorgeous scenery as we make our way to Engineers Pass.
A cool shot!
Simply stunning! You can see the remnants on an old mining road that the mountain is taking back. (non-maintained)
The Swedish Express. Conan on the left next to his Husky 610, me (logjump) on the right and Cheeseberger's Swedish turbo-charged puller! Time to head back to Crested Butte or (CB South).
