Locking bolt size?

Anybody know the size (diameter and thread pitch) of the locking bolt described as #3 on page 24 of the '04 Repair Manual? It has a part number of 580.30.080.000; but instead of buying one, I wanted to make my own.

Hi Barry,

I made mine also.

M8 1.25, 1 1/8" long, full thread, socket head, head dia 1/2"

The parts catalogue decribes the part as.. m8 L=23 .So.. 8 mm, std thread pitch is 1.25, and length should be 23mm or just under 1 inch....nsman

Thanks fellas. Does the end of the bolt need to be ground to a point?

Yes

I ground mine with a 5 mm dia. end 5 mm long that I chamfered 45 deg. to 4mm dia. to fit into the slot on the crank. The slot on my 04 crank wheel is such that my bolt end just fits into it. I tighten into the slot finger tight when wanting to hold the crank at TDC for all tasks except when torquing the crank gear nut, flywheel, intermediate shaft gear, or transmission mainshaft nut. I tighten the stop bolt to 5Nm for those tasks.

When installing the stop bolt I use a straw or wooden skewer in the spark plug hole to find approximate TDC, then shine a light in to the case where the stop bolt will go and look for the slot in the crank. I then lightly screw in the stop bolt until it just touches the crank and then turn the crank back and forth a few degrees until I feel the stop bolt fit into the slot, and then finger tighten the bolt.

I would much have preferred to buy the proper stop bolt, but none of the dealers I called had one in stock.

I have yet to dial indicate the piston TDC to check the accuracy of the crank slot and the machined stop bolt location in the engine case.

Hope this helps,

Joe
