Leaking stock fuel cap

On my previous rides, I noticed that when I laid the bike down, it would leak fuel. I didn't have time to investigate where from exactly, but naturally was suspect of the vent hose.

Today, I took the tank off the bike to mount the cooling under-tank blanket. With the tank off the bike and fuel still in the tank, I just tilted it and gas was freely coming out of the vent hose. Not just dripping, but rather full flow, like the ball was not even there or not closing at all.

I don't think this is the correct behavior. I took the cap apart and the steel ball is moving with no notable debris in the way.

What's going on here? What am I missing in the stock cap's functionality.

Some remove that ball as it can be a problem if it gets stuck and restricts the air from coming in. If you have a 70 degree subtank or a home made one that ball must be removed.

If you shake the fuel cap you should hear the ball rattle if it's there. If it's not don't worry. Just don't let your bike lay too long on it's side or if you want that functionality install an external valve:

I read some people removing the ball ... which I don't mind if I have a reason to. The ball moves and should close the opening, but it doesn't. I am not sure why not ... perhaps some manufacturing defect between the opening and diameter of the ball? I don't know ... It looks like the ball moves, but never enough to close the opening ... unless the bike is 180 degrees upside down ... which obviously almost never happens.

What brand is that external one you have posted? And I assume you remove the stock rattling ball and stick the external one simply on top of the stock cap?

Don't know what brand it is. Should be quite easy to find if you google for husaberg fuel hose breather. And yes, you remove the ball and stick that one on top of the stock cap.
