Leak Down Test

Have an 2010 fe 450 with 230 hours on it. Just had valves checked and were bang on and a leak down test with results of 19% and with this result I'm not sure if its time for a rebuild.. I've had 2 different opinions from mechanics and im left on the fence on what should be done. To rebuild or not to rebuild is the question???

If it runs good leave it alone. These motors have proven very durable. I have found some mechanics do not know how to do a proper leak down test. Hard to do a leak down test without disabling the auto decompression device.

+1 to what said above,

where was the leakage coming from? into the engine breather pipe? out the exhaust or intake? if its out the exhaust or intake double check your valve adjustment as one being too tight could cause this.......if its from the breather would indicate leakage past piston/rings/cylinder wall.......i do not know the spec for the bike but generally i like to see less that 10% when on a car ideally 2-3% or even more ideal.....0

19% i would think on a single it would be where you could start to feel a problem......

but it would be easy to get a false reading i would think as it seems a difficult test on a cylinder cylinder (the one i have tested was difficult anyway and i dimissedmy results because of it) lol

if its leaking past the rings i usually dump a lil oil inthe cylinder then reperform the test just to see if it goes away or say drops from like 19% down to 5%.....if your not having issues i personally would run it a little more whats the worst that could happen, replace the same parts now or later? at least when it blows up you know what you need to replaced, at 19% you might get in there and not know what the cause is anyway and still have to use the shotgun approach to be sure you've fixed it.....

ie: shotgun approach: replace everything that is a possible cause :bounce3:

you never did say is it running bad? why did they do a leakage test anyway.................

The bike is running great..And the shop I use suggested the test be done with the hours on it.. So I let them have at it..They made it sound like it was a ticking time bomb with the results they got....but after all the feed back from here and other mechanics I'm going to run her for another season..

Chris, did you put rings in it? The last time I was riding with you your bike blue as much blue smoke as my 2013 XC250. Put some rings in it.
